Your options are to either go in person to an Academy store, or order it off Academy's website. The individual stores aren't set up to handle shipping individual items themselves. They'd have to figure out stuff like shipping cost and sales tax for your specific location on the fly, plus deal with the packing and shipping without the benefit of a shipping department, and then have some mechanism to remit the sales tax to the appropriate city and state on the back end. Then the individual store would also be assuming the liability and hassle of dealing with any lost or damaged shipment.

Instead, all mail ordering is done through their e-commerce website, which has systems in place to handle all those intricacies of a mail order, and then it's shipped from a central warehouse. It's much simpler and more efficient this way.

All of the chain stores work this way. You can't call up an individual Walmart or Best Buy or Cabelas store and tell them to ship you something. That's handled through their websites instead.

There may be a few mom and pop individual stores out there that would take a phone order like that, but not many these days.

(When you were doing "charge sending" back in the day, I'm going to assume it was well before the requirement was put in place for businesses to collect and remit sales tax on all orders, even those from other states. That's only one example of how modern mail ordering has gotten more complicated.)

actually,

they are,

most medium to big retailers use a system called BOSS or OMNI that is basically using the stores inventories to ship catalog or online items to customers,

so you order a fishing reel from Bass Pro, or a choke from Cabelas, or a set of shoes from Academy, and the online system looks at which store has the inventory and they ship from the store,

they have employees that do this daily, and a shipping dept in the back room,

makes sense, since the inventory is in the store, and so is the labor, so that is easier and cheaper than hiring staff to pick package etc from a warehouse(s) for the entire company (treat the entire company as an online warehouse)

they will not take CC over the phone, usually, except for certain conditions,
example, Cabelas/Bass Pro will do what is called a Send Sale, which allows the employee to manually type in a CC,, but only a CC (no debit) for used gun transfers, and not much else,

by not doing as I think Bendable wants them to do, they don't have to worry about chargebacks, or CC miss use (re stealing) etc ,

also remember that the big stores get deliveries from each major carrier, but only have a contract with one for shipping, and contracted prices on company shipping is dirt cheap

Some shoe companies go all the way up to 6E widths.

(Narrower than standard width shoes work the same way in the other direction, just using A's: A = Narrow, AA = Extra Narrow, and so on.)

I think what bendable was looking for (besides actual shoes) was a human to assist him in person when he walked into a brick and mortar. Not just redirect him.

Back in the day, I could walk into a retail establishment where there was a knowledgeable/trained troubleshooter behind the counter that was able and more capable than me of solving the question without taking extraneous amounts of time. This was their job and they knew how to accomplish things quickly and efficiently vs. me, who might know very little about the subject or how to accomplish what I wanted because I didn’t do it every day.

Now we basically have hosts that want to re-direct us to do it ourselves if it’s not simple and doesn’t follow their flowchart.

Just had this happen to me Friday when I tried to create a prepaid shipping label for an international destination. I’ve gone into the UPS store twice to be told by the dim bulbs behind the counter “that’s easy, just go online”… I.e “we aren’t going to do that for you”.
I’ve been online twice now and on the phone with customer service three times finding out that I’ve been told inaccurate info over and again. I’m taking hours (hold time) of what should’ve taken five minutes for someone who does this on a regular basis.

Bendable, check out Rogue’s link. Maybe it’s your answer. Then buy a few pair so you don’t have to deal with this bullshit Smile

Because there's no need for them to do so. The fulfillment center already has them in stock in its warehouse. You just have to order a pair from their website.

Perhaps back when you were doing it, but not today. Nowadays, you can't ship a shoebox anywhere for only $8, not to mention also cover the business' additional labor and supply costs required to ship it.

free ground shipping on $35 or more orders per the link you provided

That is standard service at The UPS Store where I have my account. It sounds like the owner / manager at the location you used is not providing the service that the company advertises.
