We just got a new "local" station. It’s a little surprising because our area is just too small to warrant a station, but I strongly suspect the station really isn’t local. The traffic reports are the clue. I’ll have been sitting on the 41 bridge for ten minutes and can see the semis aren’t moving on the 75 bridge a few miles up the river when a traffic report comes on to says there’s no delays on either road.

Local talk station, Dan Bongino, Shannon Burke, its the Florida Man Radio LOL, generally some interesting comments, some humor, a couple of music stations.

Agree though way too many commercials, especially FMR, Bongino is bad, you'll get 10 minutes of paid air commercials, he'll start an interesting topic and segway right into a paid ad segment.

Since I don't spend a lot of time on my trips in the car it's absurd, nothing but commercials, so I just change the channel or turn it all off.

I read probably elsewhere that car makers may drop the AM band from radios in the future. I read Ford has already started due to noise induced from the all electric drivetrain.

Me and the Tomminator listen to local show in the morning on the way to school. He likes the “why did you get ghosted” where they call a person who went out with someone and then didn’t keep contact. Some of them are pretty funny, some are pathetic and it’s a good teaching moment for a teenager.

Then it’s Sirius channels.

A word of advise for the Tormminator: Don't use the "5 steps to get your crush to like you" as found on the internet. The girls are wise to that. I overheard my daughter and her friends talking about a guy that did just that to one of the friends. I'm still laughing.

LOL - same here. Unless I am driving through LA, I will listen to them on my phone before listening to FM.
<snip>

The KUSC transmitter is 200 miles north of my San Diego home. But I used to get KUSC-FM regularly on my Bose Wave Radio. The KUSC app on my iPhone is much better though. With my iPhone in one corner of my condo my Apple AirPods receive the BT signal anywhere I walk.

I would say that Clear-channel is responsible for destroying much of the radio industry and programming. They bought up most all the local mom and pop stations and it's been downhill ever since.

My wife has a Spotify account and we listen to that when we’re together otherwise it’s the sweet sound of a flat 6 behind me that brings a smile to my face…

after commuting for so long and listening to radio, here's what I figure: when there are few listeners, there are fewer advertisements. The stations use this to bring more listeners by advertising "non-stop music for a full hour!" As the program becomes more popular and gets more listeners, the commercial time keeps increasing until there's only 3 minute segments between commercials.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I know you are in VA, and near(ish) to Charlottesville,

try WNRN, see if they broadcast in your area,

I listen to them in RVA,

since I had my Cooper totaled years ago I stopped coughing up for XM/Sirius, and have found WNRN to be a good station,

not so much a hard rock or classic station, mostly local (VA) stuff, Alt Country/Americana in the AM, a smattering of damn near everything during the day,

other than that, (They stream too) it is online stuff like pandora etc when in any of the vehicles,

or in my shop

Uggg. Morning shows suck. Of the 5 stations I listen to in NoVa, two are the worst. No music and the 'shock jock' format copying the Howard Stern Show in supporting players. Next two is a classic rock and a Gen X (80s with some late 70s/early 90s mixed in). They were good about music, but they're both slipping into ads and chat. The local right wing talk is good on the morning drive, but sometimes one just needs to rock out on the drive in.

My main FM radio station in my cars is a local classical station, the best one I have ever listened to. The commercials are not overbearing and obnoxious. I occasionally tune in to a college rock station, really no commercials, and pretty decent music, even though much of it I have never heard of before.

One station I love is a high school station that plays 1970's & 80s Top 40 stuff. High school DJs and staff. Really cool, but reception is spotty, which is too bad. Here is a sample of their playlist-

My radio will show the channel, artist and song except in the morning when they sell that space for advertising. Nothing better than seeing a phone number for Joes Plumbing scrolling across my screen.

I made a point to never hire or buy from a company which takes over my radio screen.

I borrowed a friend's car for a week and all I could listen to was the radio. I'm actually quite surprised at how much music is being played on the radio stations around me. I listen to all different types of music so I was able to program about 20 stations in his car. If one ever went to commercial I could try the other 19 and find something I liked. I swore when I was a kid the radio stations coordinated their commercial breaks so it didn't matter which one I switched to, there would be commercials.

When we were having our house painted, the Mexican workers were listening to the radio. Must say the music sounded way better musically than the usual pop, rock, rap and C/W stations.

Despite being about thirty miles from Lansing,Detroit,Flint and Ann Arbor we have a lot of drop out areas so Internet radio is a no go.

I have Sirius in both cars. I usually listen to 40’s, 60’s and Garage (channel 21) but lately more of 21.
