Air compressors at gas stations… Login/Join

I knew I should have put in more detail, but I was really just venting.

I have a plug in air compressor at home, but it takes forever, is loud and is a bit of a pain to use.

I am a huge fan of Discount Tire, and went to the nearest one when my wife and I swapped cars. The Snowbirds are back (but that’s another rant) and the line for the air check/fill was around the building, out the parking lot and running down the road. Interestingly mostly Teslas. So down the rabbit hole of looking for a gas station with a compressor.

A compressor you can carry in a vehicle is a great idea, the car makers used to include them before run flat tires became a thing. My wife’s car is a two seat sports convertible that has a trunk that is marginal for a carry on bag. I don’t begrudge her choice in cars, my next one is hopefully going to be a C8 Corvette convertible.

I have quality tire gauges in all our vehicles, as I don’t trust anyone’s compressor readings, including Discount Tire.

Thanks for the tip on Lowes, I didn’t know that and they are on my way home.

Thanks for the tips on compressors, as I need a newer, better one.

Still doesn’t explain the lack of operable compressors at gas stations all over town.

If all you need to do is air up a tire or blow out an air filter , etc. a small pancake compressor is all you need at home . They pump up pretty quick and don't take up a lot of room .AND they are light enough to be portable when needed . I had a 12 gallon compressor in my garage for many years . I scored a pancake compressor out of a trash pile that cost me $18 for parts to repair it . Now the larger one is out in the shed collecting dust .

I have an ARB compressor kit under the hood on two of my 4x4's. Permanently wired through a relay with an in-dash on/off switch. The hose is quick connect and easy to stash. These take a bit of time for four big AT tires but typical car tires would be easy work.
At the least carry one budget 12v compressor that gator clips onto your battery. You can use it for either car. Even the cheap and tiny 12 volt outlet compressors are okay for a top off.

Like others, I have a unit in my garage, but there are times I will fill my tires at Costco, they have three nitrogen stalls for people to use. Fill up on some gas, then pull into one of the reserved parking spaces to top off the tires. There is always a couple available when I go there.

My gripe is when the air compressor at the gas station either eats money without producing air, or worse the compressor is inop and putting the hose onto the tire deflates it.

I always use a decent gauge when filling a tire. I never trust the tire shop to do it right either.

Tbh, I usually use a high volume low pressure bicycle tire pump at home to top off even the car tires a couple of pounds. Motorcycle tires are not much more effort than bicycle tires.

Costco pumps are "free" for members meaning it's not a coin-op. We probably do pay for it in the membership though.

I’ve been using this combo for about 5 years now. Tighten up the bleed valve or whatever it’s called. Turn it on and let it fill. Then air your tires up in near silence. Long extension cord and I can get to all 18 tires I have to manage (spares included).

I used to work at a gas station in my younger years. We had a free air pump. It had to be fixed just about every other week. After a while they went to a 25¢ for 5 minutes pump and it lasted for the rest of the time that I worked there. Apparently, the people that used it abused it when it was free. They’d leave the hose and nozzle where they finished with it and would run it over. They’d beat on it when it quit instead of just pushing the start button. All solved by a small fee.

I wouldn't know. Never had the so-called "ice cream" at McDonald's. Do not like the soft-serve stuff, I prefer real ice cream (maple walnut!) that is scooped, rather than the stuff that dribbles out of a nozzle.

Alternatively, if your triceps are getting flabby, just use a bicycle pump. Last time I did that I was sore for 2 days.

You'd think the other places would figure that out that charge for it. If I'm stopping for air, I may as well get gas and maybe a coffee or a snack or hoagie.

They are around here, the one close to us has one air pump, and it's out 25% of the time, the ones with two are better you have a 50/50 at them. They do get a lot of use though since all the stations around them charge.

The one by us has a quick oil change on the property by the air pump, they do free air as well, and their system uses the same beeper on the same frequency, with all the traffic and noise it's difficult to hear if it's them or the WaWa pump beeping some times LOL, especially since the valves on the truck are always at the bottom on the far side so you can't see the pump anyway. But yeah WaWa is good about this...

Costco has free nitrogen pumps, ours has 4, so If I'm close they are the go to...

Do have a compressor at home as well, what I need is a better air chuck with gauge, the FH one sucks donkey balls...
