The little town 6 miles away had a small Southern States, 2 gas/diesel stations, a butcher shop, 2 bars, a country restaurant, barber shop, elementary school, VFD, and a couple churches. But there was no where to pick up basic home and food stuff like beans, milk, DW detergent, dog food, beer, etc. Then a Dollar something came.

THB I'm not sure what ours is, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, etc., but it's sure been handy in a place that had nothing like that. It's always busy.

How do they prey on anyone? They provide many necessities at what I see as reasonable prices, at locations that are more convenient.

Bet you got a Dairy Queen nearby,

Arkansas was a DQ desert until a few years ago. Cabot Arkansas DQ set a world record on opening day with most transactions in a single day.

Maybe in Central AR... We've had DQs up here in the NWA Metroplex for at least a decade or more.

The theory is they provide too many unhealthy options for a generally less affluent population to buy, without providing fresh meat, fruit and veggies. Because it's so convenient, the po' folks just stop here and get their chips and processed food instead of going a few miles further from time to time with a plan to an actual grocery store.

Feels like excuse-making to me. Heck, it may be a financial boon since folks can get that shit cheaper here than at the corner store, albeit still more than a grocery store.

The only person they might(?!) be hurting is the small store owner you drive by to get to the DG, but that's just normal market forces at work. Plus as long as the DG doesn't sell gas, the corner store is still getting plenty to traffic for that and the associated walk-in items.

The nearest Dollar General to my house is 5 miles away.

And the nearest Dairy Queen is 10 miles away.

Wife goes to a “Dollar Tree” for Birthday/holiday cards, and an occasional helium balloon. Haven’t been in a DG in 10+ years. There’s one 7 or miles from my home.

Dollar General caters to “poor” neighborhoods by catering to their “poor” mentality. They often charge higher for less quantity and poorer quality. The poor quality is intentional in that it validates the customer’s self-evaluation that they are poor while, at the same time, allowing the corporation a higher profit margin.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

We have a DG about 2.5 miles from us. Ruffles are cheaper there. That's my primary reason for stopping at ours, Gotta feed my chip habit.

They are handy, it's 12 miles to the nearest grocery store. If you need something you forgot in town, they are handy.

I go to our local DG store very frequently, including just last night for a big bag of kitty kibble. Way more convenient, and easier to access that either of my closest Wal-Marts are! In fact, it is normally my FIRST choice when I need to go to the store for something, and I only go elsewhere when I know (or reasonably suspect) that DG won't have what I need.

According to Go ogle,
575 new D.G.'s are scheduled
to be built and open in 2025.

I think they need a name change to

My cousin Larry the redneck lives so far out in the sticks he doesn’t get Saturday Night Live until Monday.

BTW Dumpster General is now building a new style building. It’s called DG Market. These are different, they are a nice small grocery store, well stocked with frozen foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. They’re about the size of an Aldi’s. They’re nice and clean and well stocked up with a good variety of name brand goods.

Getting that way in the Northern Lower Peninsula. I'm in Roscommon and every time I drive somewhere a new Dollar General or a Dollar tree pops up. In the most unlikely spots too...

Dollar General exploded all over the rural parts of Texas that I've seen the past 5 or so years. Less than 5 year old stores everywhere.

I like to head out to the country back roads to ride my motorcycle and it's like Corporate placed them in a grid pattern. Often times, there is no gas station or other type of c-store for 10 minutes and most of the rural gas stations have old, shitty c-stores so the Dollar General is a step up.

In my part of the country, if a Dollar General bag blows across a vacant lot and stops long enough, a Dollar General will sprout by the next day.
