CapOne Debit Cards Now Discover
Anyone else have a Capital One checking account and irritated by their debit card being switched to Discover?

I’ve been looking for an excuse (or impetus, really) to close the account. This is going to do it. Maybe once CapOne has expanded Discover to 100% merchant acceptance - including international - it won’t matter, but for now, if I need a debit card, it’s going to be Visa or MC.

I'm more irritated in Discover being under Capitol One. I sure hope their service doesn't change, because that's the card I use most, and the one I've had the longest.

I have had my Discover Card since 1987. I have no issues with it being accepted everywhere. U.S. based customer service, staffed by actual people knowledge in assisting customers is a BIG plus.

CapOne bought Discover to get an actual card processing network as an alternative to being bound to Visa/MC. I think they’re incentivized to spread it.

I am very impressed with Capital One as a financial service provider. The seamless switch from one card processor to another doesn't faze me one bit. If they make more money, and it doesn't change my access to funds, who cares? I use Venture X card mostly, and have thousands of "miles" saved up for a future retirement trip. I find Capital One Travel quite inexpensive, with a useful interface and good package deals. Call me a fanboi but my experience is uniformly positive.

Discover turned me down in about 1987… I’ve given them the Razz raspberry since!

In the last ~20 years, through a series of acquisitions and name changes:

Walmart credit card > Walmart Discover > Walmart Synchrony Mastercard > Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard > Capital One Savor Mastercard

Cabela's (World's Foremost Bank) Visa > Capital One Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops Mastercard

Household Bank Mastercard > Capital One (forgot name) Mastercard > Capital One Quicksilver Mastercard

So now I have three Cap One cards. I must say, however, that every transition has been completely seamless and have kept the same credit lines and terms, with one even getting an increase.

This has been my experience as well. We are able to get enough miles to take business class flights overseas yearly.

My adventure with Discover: Early 1990s, I was traveling a lot for work, used the Discover card. I always paid the hefty monthly bill in full. One month, I sent them a check for $3,000 (three thousand) and the data entry clerk shifted the decimal point and posted $30.00 dollars to my account, leaving me with a balance owed of $2,970.00. After several failed attempts to get this straightened out, with the "balance" accruing interest each month, I told them to pound sand.

The account was eventually purchased by a collection agency that sent letters. I responded, asking whether they would insure that there was no negative information on my credit report, if I paid in full. They assured me, so I sent them a copy of the cancelled check, along with the full history of the problem. Never heard another word, until I applied for a vehicle loan with my Credit Union. They asked about the Discover account, I sent them copies of everything, got the loan, and that was it.

I have since received many "you are approved" letters in the mail, inviting me to open a Discover credit card account. Nope. Not gonna happen.

With the security risks today I’m mystified at anyone using a debit card.

Every bank / credit union that I have dealt with, stopped issuing ATM cards many years ago. If I want to access an ATM to withdraw cash, I have to use the financial institution's debit card. No other option.

I reluctantly accepted a debit card for my account, but I keep it locked (frozen) at all times except the rare occasions when I need to access an ATM.

What business don't accept Discover? I've never had any problems using mine anywhere I've shopped.

I just did a search online to see who doesn't accept Discover and the only major one listed seems to be Costco. I guess I've just never noticed when I've been there.

What a mess, Mr. V-Tail! Like you, I still toss/shred the offers from Discover.
(Mom claims I hold a good grudge… who knew!?) Smile

I was a college student with very little income, so I understand why Discover turned me down.
Shortly thereafter, though, I was approved for an AT&T Universal Card (now Citibank), with some crazy-high limit. I’m sure I’ve repaid the favor in nearly 40 years’ worth of “card loyalty.” Big Grin

Costco does not accept MasterCard or American Express for in-store purchases (MasterCard can be used for online purchases).

Because of Costco's exclusive arrangement with VISA, Costco receives lower processing fees and passes the savings on to the customers.

***** Old thread *****

I received today the new card issued by Capitol One after the Discover acquisition. Went thru the activate process and "discovered" my Capital One Quicksilver Visa account had disappeared.

Jeannie (in Mumbai) said yes your account is now a capital one discover account. I don't want that. Costco is one reason. No problem she said, just apply for a new Visa account. Really?

Finally got to a supervisor (Ken in Athens AL) who did something that will supposedly result in a new Visa card sometime in the next 90 days. It won't be my original account number which means changing any automatic stuff and I have several.

Somebody's head should roll on this one. Maybe the dumbest changeover I've ever seen.

So what card/bank are folks happiest with?

I received an offer from Capitol One for a new card.

It was a low 28.99% rate (insert any Samuel L. Jackson dialogue here).

Nope.

I still give my friend crap about discover. He's a writer and he's down in South America trying to deal w/ withdrawing money from Western Union through his Discover card.

He was told, "".Amigo, there are no ATMs in Latin America that accept Discover. "

So naturally, I continue to make fun of his card. Big Grin
