I wasn't aware of this and received a notice in the mail. Apparently, this program started in March. I got lucky and was within a grace period, where they're only sending out warnings to violators with fees starting around August. Please note, these are not red light cameras.

The camera that got me was located on Geary Blvd., somewhere between 19th Ave. and Masonic Ave. From the angle of the photo, it appears the camera is up as high as the street lights. I did not see any form of street signage warning of the cameras, but perhaps I missed them. Interestingly, the cameras seem to be operated by SFMTA, the organization that operates public transportation. While I do know they're in charge of issuing parking tickets, I wasn't aware that they enforce all traffic violations.

I was doing 36mph in what is now a 25mph zone? I thought Geary was 35mph--especially since that specific area is mostly commercial.

The locations:

Sunset? 19th? Van Ness? Geary?

What they need are tickets for those speed racers on the electric scooters. Especially in side walks.

They were banned in the Houston area a few years ago. They were causing accidents for people hitting the brakes to not run the lights.

We're in Pensacola right now & glad I have Waze, tons of cameras here.

Speed cameras and red light cameras are different. Wink

Thanks, I read it as red light cameras somehow. First I've heard of speed cameras here. Never seen one in TX.

Wonder how much of SF ticket revenue is going to Verra Mobility for the cameras, likely the program has revenue sharing. JMO private companies should never be allowed to share in the revenue of tickets, it can result in companies changing the settings in the cameras to increase tickets and revenue.

Verra Mobility is an AZ publicly held company, big into traffic enforcement and revenue sharing for all kinds of transportation enforcement

https://www.verramobility.com/

From AI....

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) owns and administers the speed cameras in San Francisco. The program is a result of Assembly Bill 645, which allows the agency to pilot this technology for five years.

The SFMTA contracted with Verra Mobility to install and operate the speed safety cameras at 33 locations throughout the city. The cameras are strategically located on the High Injury Network, which accounts for a high percentage of severe traffic-related injuries and fatalities in San Francisco.

The SFMTA's Automated Enforcement Program, which includes the speed cameras, is a collaborative effort with the San Francisco Police Department, the Superior Court of San Francisco, and the San Francisco City Attorney's Office

SF was number one in CA for Verra - Link SF, Oakland is getting the second installation, Link Oakland

Probably paid a huge sum to purchase the cameras from them and are now paying a service fee for operating them. The tickets they'll be charging people are pretty steep, though. I'm sure SFMTA will still be able to make a profit off it. Lord knows, they don't make a profit off actual transit fares.

City of Richmond VA has these abominations now around schools. Why don't they put cameras in Whitcomb Court, Gilpin Court, Hillside Court, Creighton Court, Fairfield Court, and Mosby Court? These places are all "courts" where murders occur on a near weekly basis, and no one sees nothing. If you are an intelligent and caring government official, why don't you look at the actual statistics of kids being mowed down near the schools (zero) vs. the murders that occur per year and the location of those murders. 2023 = 64 murders. 2025 = 53 homicides. That's five per month.

Traffic cameras are solely revenue generators, and a way to minimize policing costs.

The speed cameras were intended to track San Francisco meth heads, but even with AI support, the numbers were too vast.

When I lived in Calgary, there were speed cameras on the westward route (aka Hwy 1) from Calgary to the Rocky Mountain resort towns. On top of that, they had a ridiculously low speed limit for the flat portion through the rural cow pasture areas.

Canada has different rights for citizens and I don't believe their courts are set up on right to face your accuser which is where speed cameras and red light cameras have had legal issues in the USA.

I know red light cameras are different than speed cameras, but one reason Houston's red light cameras are no more is the it was a private company running them and they got a percentage of the ticket. They were caught breaking state standards for duration of yellow light (i.e. shorten it illegally to generate more revenue from tickets). If San Fran is outsourcing their speed cameras and giving a percentage of tickets then there is the incentive to fudge the speed recorded.
