I thought I'd post an update and few pictures on the stray dog (boxer) that had been dumped and had taken shelter living on the porch of an old home on the property. She's named "Strafie" and is living a great life with Sofie and I now.

She and Sophie on the front porch.

Out on a walk.

One of her bad habits is thinking she's a lap dog and hopping on my lap. I decided to take a pic of her doing so and right as I took the pic she turned wo give a kiss!

Today just napping on the dog couch.

One bad habit from being a scrounge much of her life is she routinely brings back animal parts to share with Sophie and "enjoy in the yard". So far about 8-9 front deer legs and one entire rib cage. No doubt related is she has gone from skin and bones to a bit chunky so I'm trying to cut her dog food back.

She is probably the most attention loving dog I've had and shows utmost remorse when I holler at her for doing something wrong like chewing up a cardboard box or bringing deer legs in the yard (LOL but she still does it).

Straife certainly seems to have hit the jackpot and ended up in the right place...and it seems like you're not too bad off for it yourself, either Smile.

Thanks 92 and Swede. Pet ownership has its drawbacks but the affection and camaraderie more than make up for them. Sophie, Strafie, and I are in a good place right now.

I'll share this. Sophie is over 13 now and a couple months back she had been getting weaker, not eating much, then nothing, didn't even want meat. I had to carry her outside and upstairs to her bed, she seemed to be failing. After a couple more days I had to carry her to the truck but Barb and I got her into the vet on Friday. Given her age and symptoms we all came to the conclusion her life was about over. They could run a few tests but the results wouldn't be back until Monday or Tuesday and by then it'd likely be too late and probably just reveal some organ was failing in her old age. They talked to us about putting her down and that if I wanted, they had someone that worked Sundays and could come to the house. To say I was distraught was an understatement. I just wanted to take her on a walk one more time like we always did, and maybe see her and Strafie chase each other around the pond. Frown

Barb asked "if you do tests could they reveal something that is treatable? And if so... how would you treat her?" They said "if it were some internal infection along with stress from pain, etc. we could prescribe an antibiotic".

I said "let's do that now, we don't have time for test results so how about you just prescribe what might possibly help, there's nothing to lose."

After signing a statement that said "prescription given without test results" we left with Doxycycline, Prednisone, and a pain medication.

That evening she still didn't eat but sipped a little chicken broth then slept well all night. Saturday morning she walked down the steps and outside, came back in and ate food, then napped. That afternoon she was hungry again (maybe helped by the prednisone) then walked all around the yard with Strafie. Over the next 3 days she got stronger, kept eating, and returned back to her old self. That was almost 2 months ago, she hasn't had any meds in over a month, and she's back running around the property just like always!

Daughter's Akitas (Father and Son) enjoying their kind of weather.

Daughter and I, not so much. 6 inches of heavy wet snow over ice. Slicker'n a smelt even with my ice spikes on.
