I shot up two 50-round boxes of the 40-grain FMJ that had only 48 cartridges in them. Got a third one today that was also two rounds short. Three times is a pattern. It's not a mistake in counting on my part. Federal Cartridge has a customer service phone number that I'll call next week (not open weekends). I didn't keep the first two boxes, but I'll keep the latest box for its lot number/date code if needed.

Maybe they off-loaded a couple rounds so they wouldn't jam coming out of the box?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The mob does this. It is called skimming. My hunch is that it is a problem on the line and a lack of quality control. This sort of thing happens in factories. My guess is you will get some free ammo if you talk to the right person. Now some will say that is what you get for buying the cheaper 5.7 ammo. Just joking I have find their ammo equivalent to the high priced FN ammo.

I don't understand this.
That's my feeling as well. The boxes are probably packed by machine, and one mistake programming or setting the machine up will happen to every box loaded by it. As for talking to them, I keep forgetting, but will get around to it. "The Almighty, He put some livin' things on this earth so a man can eat." - Festus Haggen, Gunsmoke

It was my attempt at a lame joke, based on how some soldiers are taught to offload their magazines by 1 or 2 rounds to prevent jamming.

Another reason for me not to buy Federal 5.7 in addition to not being properly coated to work in a P90 or PS90.

I don't think I have any Federal, as I usually buy the Fiocchi 5.7 bulk packs but it's good to know, especially with the cost of the ammo to begin with. One problem I occasionally have with the Fiocchi and some other brands, is the occasional bullet that comes out of the case due to the ammo not having a crimp.

Did you buy it direct from federal? I could see a store clerk grabbing a couple of free rounds.....but Federal tents to be error free and near perfect generally. (My real name's Bill. I was feeling paranoid when I signed up:-)

No, from Bass Pro, Academy or Midway, and didn't keep track of what or how many I got where. Not long ago I said I had no plans for 5.7 anything, but the Ruger LC Carbine (found used for $150 off new) and reasonably-priced ammo changed my mind. Light, handy and little recoil to speak of. Nobody is going to want to stand in front of a ballistic-tip or hollow-point 5.7 bullet out of a 16-inch-barreled rifle. That's very unlikely. Those things aren't packed by hands. I'm going to bet it's an automated system that's a quick step from inserting the bullets into the inserts to unit packaging. Then before it goes to the shipping pakage, there's most likely a weight that can tell if the box is light and it gets pushed to the side. Then you also have the employees going through security going into and out of the plant. It was most likely at the retail store if people were involved. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
