We have been battling blood sugar issues with my oldest for years now but he is not diabetic so he can’t be prescribed a continuous glucose monitor. We try to feed him every two hours and that works kind of but he will have random drops and then becomes symptomatic. With the constant monitor we can set an alert when he reaches a certain level so we know he needs food before becoming symptomatic. But no diabetes diagnosis no meter! I walk into the pharmacy and in comes a dog with a continuous glucose monitor on its back hip! You have got to be kidding me! ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. Bullfuckingshit. Find a better doctor. They cannot cause any harm to the user so they should not even require a prescription to begin with. Insurance may not want to pay for it so you may have to pay out of pocket but tricare doesn’t cover them so I'm paying out of pocket with a prescription so big deal. If you can’t get a doctor to prescribe one shoot me an email. “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management

I use the Libre 2 and the alarms are literally life saving. Sugar levels can drop so fast the liver cannot release the glucose fast enough. i use two sensors per month as they are good for 14 days and I pay 75.00 per month with insurance. As others have said, get a better doctor. “Our actions may be impeded... But there can be no impeding our intentions or our dispositions. Because we can accommodate and adapt. We do rx the crap outta the Freestyle Libre, but they're not generally insured, so it's an out of pocket item for the most part. For what our clients used to pay for an 8 "stick" glucose curve, we can now provide the Freestyle Libre, apply it for them, and have them get several days worth of data points to bring back for data comparison. Ain't technology grand?? Sounds like your kiddo needs to see an endocrinologist, not a generalist (unless I've missed the part where that's who you are seeing, which is entirely possible). ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. A pediatric endocrinologist. They are worth it as kids are different. All major metropolitan areas have them as well as medical schools.

Diagnosed hypoglycemic by arguably the best pediatric endocrinology department in the nation. No diabetes diagnosis no continuous monitor prescription. Our pediatrician is not versed in enough in pediatric endocrine issues and punted. We saw our local Adult/Ped endocrinologist and I thought my wife was going to throat punch him as he was a complete condescending jerk. We explained how we could best bring him out of his symptoms is to give him squeezable cake icing. His very flippant response was well sweets make everything better. We requested a 2nd opinion and went to a children’s hospital system out of state that is phenomenal. They were great to deal with and made the boy very very comfortable during his 24 hour fast at the hospital. While they were able to diagnose the hypoglycemia he is not diabetic so they won’t write the RX. Wife is trying to get them to reconsider. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Have you considered just buying the thing and doing it yourself? If I recall correctly they run around $125-130? You could at least take the raw data to the doctors next time and perhaps get their attention enough to help get the next one written? Just thinking outside the insurance box, but something has gotta give and if that is what does it, it probably won't be any more expensive than the ancillary costs you've already incurred chasing some of these M.D.'s down. I am probably not seeing all the angles, but just a thought. ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. We have been able to get a couple monitors and that is the data we used to get him seen by endo. Continuous monitors aren’t just something you can go and get unfortunately. A prescription needs to be written. Insurance don’t really care if they pay or not. Not sure how long we could afford to pay out of pocket but would do it as long as we can. He is young and hopefully as he gets older he will start to recognize on his own that his blood sugar is beginning to drop and he gets food on his own. Now if we don’t feed him every two hours he’ll become symptomatic and it is a nightmare to get him to eat to bring him out of it because he feels so bad. I am starting to look into seeing how one gets one of those blood sugar service dogs. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. So sorry you're stuck in the web of bullshit. It's strange that you can't even get a prescription for something you'll pay out of pocket for. Have they given you a reason? As far as dogs go they're $15k+ and not close to reliable. https://www.npr.org/transcripts/798481601 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28974470/ You might look into ordering from a Canadian pharmacy...

Yeah, it sounds like you need a new doc. Mine was more than happy to push me towards the CGM when I got diagnosed diabetic a couple of months ago. I know your son isn't diabetic, but it's a tool that monitors glucose levels, which will help with his hypoglycemia. I don't see how that's any different from how a diabetic would use it. Honestly, I don't know why you even need a prescription for it if you're paying out of pocket...they aren't medication, and won't cause the wearer any harm. They are stupid expensive, though...after insurance and a discount card, I'm paying $38 every two weeks, and that's deeply discounted from sticker. Extrapolate that out over 52 weeks in a year and it adds up. CVS apparently has the best discounts available. Unfortunately, my local CVS sucks at life. They take forever to fill prescriptions, don't answer the phone, and are generally disorganized (bags of prescriptions stacked on the racks, floor, counter, etc...usually takes her 5 minutes to find mine when I go in there). I currently don't have one, because my sensor expired last Sunday. I put in for a refill last Wednesday, and they still don't have it ready. Tomorrow will be a week since I submitted it. It's literally putting a sticker on a box and sticking it in a bag, but apparently that's too much for them. I tried calling in about it, and they won't answer the phone. I left an expedite request on the automated system. I stopped in tonight on my way to my kids Christmas program, and there were over 20 people in line, and the drive-thru was around the building, so I walked out. The website is still showing "processing". If they ever actually get around to refilling it, I'm gonna ask them if it will give them enough lead time to complete it on time if I place my refill order 2 weeks in advance while I'm in there picking the one before up. It's ridiculous, and a darn good thing that it's just a CGM sensor and not my insulin or something else critical that they can't get around to filling.

Folks keep saying you need a different Doctor, yet I have already mentioned we have been to multiple even traveling hundreds of miles out of state to arguably the best pediatric endo clinic in the country. So clearly it’s not as simple as that. I agree I have no clue why these things are a prescription and restricted. I’d like to wear one for a couple months to see if what my blood sugar patterns are. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I do more damage to my body every time I work on my car than a libre sensor does...and the crap from the engine compartment that penetrates my skin through busted knuckles and scraped forearms sure ain't sterile like the sensor. And I've had splinters that penetrate deeper. You may be right, Black, that it has nothing to do with your doctor. There's probably some insurance rule of something that doesn't allow them to prescribe it. I still think that's bullcrap, though.

They’ll prescribe a finger stick meter all day long. But those do us no good. Pricking an 8 year olds finger constantly is not good. He fights and gets sweaty and worked up so the reading is inaccurate. Plus we need it as the alarms can be set to detect changes in blood sugar both up and down and at set readings. He is all over the board and often drops after eating as well. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. Yep, I agree, the alarms are critical for what you are trying to do, and a big reason I really like the CGM. I can set the alarm high so when I start to drop I can eat something before it gets too low, and I don't have to eat sugary stuff to spike it back up from a crash. It makes keeping tabs on my glucose really easy at work, too, not having to mess around with poking my finger all the time. You can actually buy a finger stick reader and all the associated stuff over the counter without any prescription at all. I figured that out when they screwed up my prescription and didn't prescribe anywhere near enough strips to conduct the twice-a-day testing the doc told me to do. But I totally get how that's not helpful when you're working with a kid. Plus even pricking 3-4x a day doesn't come anywhere near giving you sufficient data to determine what his patterns are like you'd get with the CGM. I hope you can figure something out. I really think it would be helpful for what you're trying to achieve.

Thank you Very little |
"Find a new doctor" isn't about finding the best qualified in the field, it's also about finding one that understands your situation and will write you the script. Find that Dr and it solves getting the blood sugar continuous monitor. Maybe your current Dr doesn't know there is a kids program, the link above is to the program, that might help. Contact the Libre systems company I put the link in above, ask them for assistance, explain the situation, nobody has a better vested interest in moving out more sensors than the people that make them, perhaps they can help. This message has been edited.
