I listed a little motorcycle on Facebook Marketplace for $2,800 firm and immediately got 7 replies, 2 lowball offers and 5 people saying either they “wanted it” or “I’m pretty sure I’ll take it when can I come look”. So I pulled the ad and started contacting.

The first one saying “I’ll take it and will come tomorrow morning” was 50 miles away. I replied it’s yours, what time tomorrow morning? He said he’ll let me know and that’s the last I heard.

So I contacted the 2nd one who said “I'll definitely take it when can I come get it?”
I said ok it’s yours how about today when would you like to come?
He then replied “I need to talk to a buddy who has a trailer and I’ll call you within an hour”.
After a couple hours I replied asking what’s going on. He said “I’m sorry it’s not working out so I can’t buy it now.”

So I’m now sending replies to the other 3 letting them know the buyer backed out and it’s available. 2 have responded: one said “I’ll take it for $2,500”, the other “I'll pay $2,600 and pick it up tomorrow.”

WTF the ad clearly said FIRM so I simply ignored them. The little bike is in mint condition and I priced it 25% less than the next lowest one listed just for quick sale and people still want to dicker? Hell I think if I priced it Free they'd call asking "how much will you pay me to take it?"

LOL so I'm taking a breather for a day or two before re-listing.

I swear that 50% of FB marketplace people just sit on it all day long and play games just for fun because they are losers with no life.

I really love when you spell out that they must pick up and it's local and these yahoos want you to deliver it to them for less than asking and it's 50 miles away. Big Grin

Yes if anything too low.

I also had a larger bike listed for $17,600 which was just above dealer trade in, well below retail. Had one offer "$13,000 cash" then later got back asking why I didn't reply?
3-4 offered between $14,000 and $15,000. These people supposedly were comfortable offering $15K w/o looking at the bike or even talking to me.
A few others "wanted it" but had to sell their bike first.

A buyer from Canada is supposedly coming to pick this one up Saturday.

LOL I must be getting grumpy because I've posted 3 rants here in a short time!

That's online in general. It's always interesting to see people get mad at you for not responding, some even going as far as starting a thread to bad mouth me, because I didn't reply to their offering me 25% of the listed price. Roll Eyes

The best ones are the ones who quickly tell you "I'll take it!"

Then they promptly go radio-silent on you for a week

After a day or more of no response, you sell the item

After a week or more, the first person responds with some lame ass excuse about how they were away/dog ate their phone/trapped in a well/etc and they get ALL PISSED OFF at you for not holding the item.

Every.Damn.Time.

Many years back I put ,y bike on FB Marketplace. First guy stated " I want it but can you ride it 70 miles north into Maine so I can look at it????? How about "NO....maybe meet halfway or so. Nothing. Next guy wanted to look at it but locally within a 15 minute ride. Loved it, set the deal and he was coming back to pick it up next day....which he did.

A few days later number one gets back to me about taking a look and was told it was gone. Someone came with cash. I get a rash of sht and whining from him.

that was quickly ended with a scuttle FU. Guess the idiot didn't realize cash talks.

JMO much of those low ball offers are flippers or dealers looking to snap up a bike they can move quickly.

Fuck 'em.

It ain't SIGforum, the "ITI" rule does not work in the FaceSpace Universe.

If they state "I'll Take it." I want a reasonable* date/time to come get it.

If they do not reply to that request at a reasonable* time, I move on to the next.

Once it's gone, I owe no shits to give them.

*(reasonable to me, and I make it clear)

I'll give some latitude to someone that is communicating.

Sold an engine once to a guy that had several things occur that pushed back the pickup three times and over a week.

(was a Over the road truck mechanic and had contacted me while on the road, had two different jobs that got in the way, and another issue at home)

But he let me know as soon as each came up and when he thought he would be free, when he finally came buy, he arrived on time, apologized again and offered me $50 more. I refused since he stayed true to his commitment.

I have had dealings with others that right off the bat, they put off a different vibe. (in all, it has been easy to sift through buyers and liars)

The one that got me was a twin bed with headboard frame box/spring and mattress (guest room so nearly unused) for $50 (local pick up only) and the woman said she'd take it, then asked if I would deliver it a hundred miles away for that $50.

LOL no I've not been asked to deliver or finance, at least not yet.

It's been a few years ago in fact I believe it was on Craigslist where I was selling a Yamaha. A young fellow said he was buying it and had the money. After three days of not showing and calling a couple times with some excuses I sold to the next buyer.
A couple days after that buyer #1 calls saying he has the money now when can he pick it up?
I say you never showed up you just kept calling with broken down car excuses, and BTW what do you mean you have the money now, you told me you had the money when you first called?
He raised his voice "my truck quit running so I had to fix it, and my grandmother had the money but I couldn't get to her until I got the truck running! You're just another typical Craigslist seller!" then hung up. Smile

The ones that get me are the arguers who try to convince you that the asking price is too high. When I sold our van online, I listed it at a fair $8,000 knowing that I would take $7,500 if offered. Got a contact saying I was way overpriced, but he'd take it for $5,000. I said no thanks, and then he kept messaging me over and over and over with links to similar vans (always in much worse condition or with higher miles) priced below mine. Wouldn't take the hint even when I told him he couldn't have it for any price. INSISTED I was an idiot and had no chance of selling the van for $8,000.

I ended up getting $8,000 cash for it.

fuck fb marketplace buyers.

last week i posted a 17yr old troybilt bronco riding mower. i said everything works except the brake so you need to slow down and shut it off then coast to a stop. I listed it for free. Come and take it.

I got so many fakers asking if i would deliver. then i got people that said they wanted it but they would have to rent a trailer and if i could hold it for two weeks. i just did a mass response, whoever gets here tomorrow morning at 8am with a trailer can have it.

I have only bought a couple of things off FB Marketplace and never sold, but know what you're talking about.

Last year, a guy was moving and selling a lot of quality furniture, including a nice leather recliner. I contacted him, told him I'd take it and that I was on my way.

He'd spent two days dealing with scam artists, low ball offers, and people who said they were on their way and never showed. He was so surprised that I actually showed up with cash in hand, that he dropped the price $100 just to show his appreciation.

I hate selling on any platform! Scammers and jerks abound.

Right now I have 3 guitars to move out, and I dread the process. I have been improving my collection over a couple of decades, so two of these are exemplary examples of desirable models. I know the crap offers and bitching I am going to get.

The 3rd is a decent but low level instrument won in a charity auction. I'd give it away to a truly deserving youngster, but how does one find such a student?
