I stopped by Dicks to get some sporting goods. While I was there, I figured I would look at their awful gun counter, because I was in the store and it has guns.

So, I perused their boring selection, and found a $200 shotgun. I figured hey, who doesn't want a $200 shotgun?

So, I tell the clerk I'll take it.

He says "I can't sell you a gun, only a manager can and there isn't one here."

OK, when will one be here?

"In 3 hours."

Alright, it's my day off, I'll come back later.

So, I come back later, and wait for a "manager" to let me do all the necessary paperwork. I enter it in their fancy computer, and give him money.

Minutes pass.

"I'm sorry, we can't sell you this, you're denied."

Oh really? That's interesting. Is it MIRCs or the Feds? (mercs is the state database)

"I don't know, it just says that someone with your name tried to buy a gun 6 times in NY State, and was a felon, so we can't sell you the gun right now, you'll have to come back."

When?

"I don't know."

So, this isn't a state or federal hold, because they aren't that specific that quickly. (I used to sell guns)

So, you'll call me when it goes through?

"No, you'll just have to check back here."

OK, when?

"In a day or two."

Hey, is this just an in-store piece of bullshit at Dick's?

"I don't know, it doesn't tell me why."

So, do you ever want to sell a gun to me?

"I can't, I'm sorry."

OK, I'll take my card back.

Fuck you, Dick's. Your in-store database is dumb, and when I want a $200 shotgun and can walk out of the store with it, in MA, that is what I shall do. But not at Dick's. Ever.

I worked for Dicks Sporting Goods in 2009 for about a year after I was laid off from my job. They must have changed the way they do things because it was not like that when I sold guns for them.

Not sure what state but it sounds like they just didn't want to sell a gun.

10 year ago (maybe 12) I was in Dicks. They had Winchester white box .45 ACP for 4.99 a box, 3.99 if you bought a case. I had them load so many in the shopping cart it bent, literally. Yes, they suck. Yes, they are totally incompetent. Yes, sometimes it works in your favor. I don't go to Dick's often, but when I do, I sometimes score.

Yeah, I got 800 rounds or so left. The cart was really hard to push.

It's not about MA, this was after I bought the P320, and I bought the Canik just this week without a blip. This is some internal Dick's BS.

When I sold guns, very rarely was there a straight up denial. Typically it was a 24hr hold because one of your details was flagged, or the check went in too close to closing time at the ATF. To not have a bunch of other details, like when the transaction would be cleared, but to see in the computer that someone in NY state with my name tried to buy guns...

Like I said, every other time at every other store in MA, I've walked out with a gun. It's Dick's. If they wanted to make the sale, they'd have been concrete about what was going on, and when it would be remedied. Not a bunch of "I don't know," and at the very least, fess up to it being internal nonsense.

I don't blame the clerk at all. I blame the big D's at Dick's.

It's been a long time since I worked for an FFL, but from what I remember, You would get told proceed, Denied or delayed when you did the NICS check. I was never given a reason why the individual was delayed or denied. So the whole "Felon in NY" story is somewhat suspicious. Also, if the Feds denied you, you got a transaction number so you could appeal it. I don't know how it goes with state based background checks.

Sounds familiar to what happened to me years back.
You wanted the dog price leader they sell at below cost.
I came home got on the stock exchange ,to their corporate office and wrote negative review. What they call bait and switch.
Next morning the manager of Mc donough Ga store call and asked me to come pick up the little dog savage that had been locked down.
I did,and was escorted out of store with manager ,outside he handed me the gun
My ding of corporate promptly went away.

I had a similar experience at Dick's about 12 years ago. I was back home visiting family in VA, and my 12yo son was there. Some cousins asked if he wanted to join in a youth trap tournament, and I decided to buy him a new shotgun.

Dick's: I can't sell you the gun. You're from Utah, and that's illegal.
Me: No, it's neither against Virginia nor Utah law.
Dick's: Then it must be against Federal law.
Me: No, the sale of long guns is governed by state laws.
Dick's: I'll have to call the police if you persist.
Me: Don't bother. I'll leave peaceably.

I haven't been in a store since. If it is company policy to only sell guns in state, just say so. Don't pass it off as law. It's one of my pet peeve's when someone says "It's against the law", but cannot tell you what law.

I haven't set foot in a Dick's since. Wasn't it Dick's that was dishonest about the AR15 black Friday deal, using the Sandy Hook shooting as an excuse to break their commitments? Dick's as a whole seems to have a vibe of malfeasance, and I won't do business with them. Ever.

There's one in San Diego. I stopped in there and asked where the firearms were.

The look on the help's face was priceless followed by "We don't sell or support such violent stuff."

We were standing next to all the boxing equipment.

Dick's removed all their ARs from the shelves after Sandy Hook. I wouldn't buy a pack of gum from those knee-jerk fools.

I wander in on a hot day for the A/C. Get some exercise walking around and check out any new fishing or hunting equipment I might be interested in at a later date. That's about all they are good for...passing time. Smile

Before they bought out Galyan's, I checked Galyan's about once a month when in the area. They had some nice O/U shotguns at the time.

Dicks is a fair weather friend. They got rid of handguns after buying Galyans and ARs after Sandy Hook. Now that Trump is in office though they are starting to sell handguns again. I'm sure once a democrat is back in office the handgun sales will stop.

Fuck them. I'll go to a LGS

WTF?

They get rid of baseball bats too because you can use them to beat someone to death?

Same here, it was pretty quickly that they pulled that little stunt. I emailed the corporate office and haven't been to one since.
