I have a hard time believing that people who use axe ,
( instead of ask )
don't have a single soul in their life that cares enough about them to teach them the difference between axe and ask.

Maybe I am just to old

I have actually had coworkers write "axe" in reports. I've given up trying to correct them and just correct and tell them to resign because I had to make spelling corrections.

Not minority enough!

Some people talk in Ebonics, b/c they think it's cool and/or to fit in w/ certain crowds.

Others talk that way, b/c that's what they grew up with. They were surrounded by uneducated people. Sometimes by the time they learn the difference between ax & ask, they can hear the difference, but pronouncing it is extremely difficult. The older one gets, the more it becomes like learning a foreign language.

Do you know anyone who says ruff instead of roof? Woof instead of wolf? Those are similar enunciation problems. I try not to judge too harshly, b/c it's not a child's fault for being raised in an uneducated environment for the first several years of his life.

I'm from the deep South . Trying to correct pronunciation and spelling is impossible . If you understand what somebody means , just go with it.

I’m on a large committee for my county where the chairperson speaks like this. Very distracting given the level of responsibility and impact our decisions have when the head speaks unprofessionally. It’s one thing if you flip a switch between audiences.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

My Summer neighbor is a highly educated man. Retired professor of Criminal Justice at a well-respected school, still active in politics at the state and (I think) national levels on law enforcement and criminal rehabilitation policy/legislation. Very well spoken yet is able and willing to converse on a serious level with an uneducated mug like me.

The first time he enquired if he could "ax" me something I had to make a conscious effort not to stand there with my mouth hanging open.

There's a gal on one of the local newscasts who has a problem with the letter L. It comes out sounding more like a W. "Yes, it was cowd today." Sometimes it's hard to understand what she's saying. I'd think that would be a liability in a job that's all about verbal communication.
