Just wondering is they are decent cars these days, drove my nephews 18 SUV the other day and it seemed like a nice car... But I remember the Jags of the 70s-80s and they did not have a good rep...

Reason I asked is I parked next to a F Type, a larger nice one. So I looked it over, the gaps were very poor, the stainless window molding was not even close to being even at the door gaps, the bumper covers did not fit great.. IDK could have been an accident repair but when the lady got in and started it, man did it sound bad.. and the flush door handle did not return to flush...

So are they good now?

thanks, 60

Jaguars have always been a British manufactured automobile.

The rules about nations I learned are:

Never take advice from the Germans on matters of sex.

Never take advice from the French on military matters.

Never take advice from the Italians on governance.

Never take advice from the British on building automobiles.

Years ago I owned, briefly, a 1970 XKE roadster. Oooooh it looked so good. Unfortunately it was rarely seen as it lived mostly on jackstands in my garage. After suffering through changing the clutch, I was faced with with a front end alignment using shims along with “tuning” the wire wheels. Somehow I managed to avoid electrical issues.

That was the end of my Jaguar experience. You couldn’t give me a Jaguar product. They apparently have, unbelievably, gotten even worse. Proof of the adage “Beauty is only skin deep”

During the time Ford owned Jaguar (1990-2008) reliability issues were addressed, with some success, as I understand it. Whether or not they were improved to American standards I haven't a clue, but doubt Jaguar ever attained that level.

There must be some Jaguar boards out there you could check for better info than here. Keep in mind you'll be dealing mostly with fanboys.

Personally, I'd avoid Jaguar (in fact, any European car company) unless you could afford expensive and frequent repairs/maintenance.

I’m biased toward older Jaguars rather than newer, but...

I get to spend time with a 2019 XE occasionally. I’ve driven it, I’ve ridden as a passenger, I’ve worked on it (routine maintenance).

It’s a nice ride, really. Maintenance is a booger. It’s definitely not designed for easy maintenance — one needs small hands and large patience. Some things are way more complicated than they ought to be. But truly, it’s a nice car. It’s very comfortable; it’s quick; it’s quiet; it’s got a reasonable trunk; it’s fuel-efficient. (It does require premium gasoline.). It’s perhaps not a car I’d go looking for, but it’s not necessarily a bad one to have. Her local dealer is gradually dropping its Jaguar support, so I do have some serious questions about the car’s longevity in her ownership. (The little voice in my head says, “swap it for a recent Camry!”)

I drove an e-Pace once. Once. I must have looked like an absolute idiot, trying to figure out the shifter and get the thing moving. It’s been a while, so I don’t remember now why it was so different from what we’re used to… but that’ll likely be the only time I drive it. My drive was just a grocery-store-and-back run, so I really didn’t get time to thoroughly evaluate it.

A neighbor a block or two away had an XF. It was a really sharp car, and he seemed to enjoy it. He’s driving an Avalon now, so….

And a former boss of mine had an F-type. He absolutely loved it; his wife did not. I heard it was hit from behind once, and the repairs were quite costly. He traded it after it was fixed, and she was happy about it.

Can’t speak for British cars but while the rest of the world was using negative ground for its automotive and motorcycles the Brit’s were using positive ground into at least 1970 and maybe later.

There were three ways of doing electrical systems on vehicles, the wrong way, the right way and the British way.

Jaguar is going all-electric and no longer produces internal combustion engines. EV's have worked out so well for them that they are buying back all the 2019 EV i-Paces.

My father had a really nice Jaguar sedan in the early 2000's. Idk which model it was, but it was luxurious and nice to drive. He leased a new car every 2 years from a different brand just for the experience. Thus maintenance was not a big concern.

The two cars he consistently said he missed were the 2004 Audi A8L and a mid 1990's Lexus. Those were the ones he kept when the lease ended.

Only Jag I would own would be an E-Type

Jag's sales are down 98%, they went EV/Woke big time, producing one of the most woke ads, like Butt Light they misread the audience for their products.

I miss my X-Type sometimes. Had it 14 years and the awd made it fun. But the $4500 ABS module for a $3500 blue book car meant it had to go.

Jeremy Clarkson had a blast with an F type on Top Gear. He of course drove it like he stole it!
I couldn't find the video.

Was recently in Phoenix. Waymo and Jag are everywhere with self driving cars. Only saw Jags being used. Waymo must have a well funded garage.

Cars I would never own.

Jag, initially the reason why Lucas was called the Prince of darkness and it only gained more defects as the years went by. Now they are very pretty and very unreliable.

Mercedes. Once noted for million mile cars today they require that the engine and transmission be replaced at 100,001 miles on the dot.

BMW. Once considered one of the finest sporting coupes or sedans you could find and designed for ease of repair. Now vastly overcomplicated, heavy, extremely difficult to repair, and like Mercedes when the odometer hits 100,001 miles you have a bottomless money pit.

I've stopped counting.
