Same here, happened about 10 days ago, a week ago tomorrow we had very high winds come through and knock out power to the entire city, I went nearly 24 hours without even a fan. It’s an old system that uses R-22, expensive to recharge if I can even find someone who still has some in stock. However the point is moot, I don’t have the funds to do that, much less acquire a new HVAC system, which is what really needs to happen.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

Look for a mom and pop ac repair company, the big boys will always push to replace any older system and they use the old Freon type as an issue and quote outrageous prices per pound.

We found a smaller local company that doesn't charge out the butt or try and push new units, the daughters AC is 15+ years old had pin hole leaks in the Evap coil.

Big companies wouldn't fix it, wanted to replace the system, and, said R22 was $150 a pound if they had it, none in stock.

Local guy we use replaced the Evap coil for $1000 including the R22.

With all the shops busy under these conditions, I would go get a window unit.

I sold the canister of R22 several years ago for $200 which had 16 pounds left.

Gadds!! I had access to hundreds of pounds of that stuff they wanted to get rid of.
They wouldn't have missed it and probably glad it was gone.

Since we are talking A/C, I would like to mention automotive, if your ride takes 134A get a can once in a while when you see a sale (without sealant). Eventually it will be phased out when demand dies off.
All the new rides this year take 1234yf, no worries though, you can get 25 lbs for $950. Or the little cans for around $50.

This government mandated deprication of refrigerant types every few years is utter bullshit. It's legislated obsolescence.

I paid $500 to get my R22 in my 18 year-old system recharged last year. I was concerned that was going to all leak out by this summer, but thankfully when I turned the A/C on last weekend, it got cold.

I know it's on borrowed time. I just hate that I'm going to have to replace the whole thing, and the perfectly functional furnace, instead of fixing the problem, simply because some tree-hugging bureaucrat decided I should have to.

My A/C was a 1983 Carrier and was replaced in 2021. The heating elements had gone bad and damaged the breaker panel.

During that time, I had two reversing valves, two outdoor fans, three or four starting capacitors, and three contactors.

There’s a product I’ve found out about ‘Leak Saver AC leak sealant & HVAC injector kit’, it gets pretty good reviews and it can be done yourself. If I could afford to get the system recharged I would consider doing this. Like you, my furnace works well and doesn’t need replacing.
