Yeah, I've run into similar with a couple phone interviews lately.

Stuff like being scheduled for a 10:30 call but the interviewer doesn't call until 10:51.

I get that shit happens sometimes. But you know that if the tables were turned and I didn't show up until 20 minutes later, they'd hold it against me.

In fact, the entire application/interviewing process at many employers sure seems to have gone downhill since the last time I was in the market 15+ years ago. Seems way less respectful of the applicants, with a big uptick in wasted time, and "ghostings".

Neighbor said he put out a job listed on InDeed and the process was unreal.

People who signed up to interview and didn't show

People who showed up to virtual interviews but not dressed properly

People who applied but didn't meet any of the requirements for hiring, then, bitched about it

People who told him to f-off after being told they don't qualify, one person threatened him.

The Crazy in people is at a new level..

Out of the 100 that replied, only 3 qualified, and half didn't have any background or experience in the industry....

We had a snafu with the time zone difference between job site and interviewed candidate. Hope your situation wasn't as simple as that.

I'm not making excuses, but just offering possible explanations.

Likely, HR outsourced the interview scheduling to India as the time zone difference is 11.5 hours ahead of Central time zone (no the 1/2 hour isn't a typo). Outsourced HR may even follow the practice of sending a separate meeting invite to the interviewee and interviewer which has a couple pitfalls:
  • They get distracted or have a brain fart between sending the two meeting invites and end up sending 2 different times (i.e. this is where outsourced HR frequently messes up the 1/2 hour part of the time zone difference).
  • They get distracted or have a brain fart between sending the two meeting invites and end up sending 2 different Zoom/Teams link to the interviewer and the interviewee. In other words, both could click their respective link on time and still be unable to meet. Both sides feel ghosted.

As I kinda figured turned out to be an operational thing that came up. But yeah could have at least shot an email to reschedule. Seems all is good now a new virtual interview the VP of operations today.

Nice. I can't STAND virtual interviews. We typically screen with phone interviews, then move to in-person. I really want to get a feel for a candidate by being in the room with them.

I want to taste their sweat! Big Grin

I sat in a virtual interview session by myself for an hour last year. The interviewer never logged in.

They sent me an email a few days later and asked if I still wanted to interview. I left them wondering.

Once upon a time, three to five or years ago HR made the meeting invite and the outcome was about 60-70% success with on-time candidates. Now that the hiring manager makes the schedule it's 90% or more.

If you cannot manage to turn on your computer at the appointed time you are no longer a candidate. Surprisingly many people contact you later and want a second chance. Not gonna happen. Not showing up and not being on time are deal breakers unless you are the Prince. {The Prince is never late} Wearing a shirt for the interview is highly suggested.

Last interview I did for a telecom company I recorded myself and then submitted. You would get a question and then you recorded your answer when ready over Zoom. You would have to move your camera so that your face fit inside a template. I thought it was pretty cleaver and was a good first step.

HR does this as well, even for quite large and well known companies. They'll schedule an interview, then never show up on the Teams or Zoom meeting they scheduled.

If you're lucky they will respond to an e-mail or call and explain they were busy and offer to reschedule. They may ghost you and you'll never find out what happened. Sometimes that tells you something about the company, but lately it seems like it's normal.

Yep. They were probably doing you a favor. Better to know now than have 6 months of performance issues ending in termination.

On the flip side, I applied for a job with a large tech company. Screening interview went great. Then I had a couple of onsite interviews with various staff members and execs. Then a couple of zoom calls with the hiring manager (who worked at the HQ on the East Coast). Then some administrative stuff with the HR dweeb. Then ... nothing.

After a couple of weeks and several ignored calls, the HR guy gets back to me and says they lost funding for the position, but that they expected to get funding restored in the next fiscal quarter. OK, I understand. But a phone call or e-mail to let me know would have been nice.

About a month later, the HR dweeb contacts me, says they have the funding and are ready to move forward ... except I need to start my application "fresh". I asked what that meant. It means I have to do another screening interview, another set of onsite interviews, another set of zoom calls with the hiring manager, etc.

I told him if that was the case, I was no longer interested in the position. I thought, if they treat applicants like this, what must it be like to work there? At first, I was pissed. But, in retrospect, I realized they probably did me a favor.

WTF. "Maybe I'll do my job today, maybe I won't." I imagine there's a job opening because there's work that's not getting done. It' not like, "Let's hire some new people just in case we might need them."

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." More on the flip side from early 2023: After HR from two well known companies scheduled virtual interviews with hiring managers, they never showed up. When I questioned HR about it, one said another meeting ran late and they would have to schedule again. The other company never responded.

Ghosting seems to now be part of HR hiring practice. They may contact you and sound quite excited, but at any point in the process they may stop responding.

Yep. Happened to me twice now in the past few months.

Interviews went well, followed by here's the plan, with this next step in this timeframe. Then that timeframe comes and goes, but silence. Reach back out, and get crickets. Ghosted.

    HRK,

I suspect it was because in Florida to collect unemployment, you have to show you are actively looking for work. People don’t really want to work, or they’re working on the side for cash, and just want to keep collecting unemployment.

One of my favorites: we were interviewing a guy over Teams when he decided it was a good time to have a snack. It's pretty amazing what people will do when the get too comfortable.
