Often, for me the school bus ride was the trip of terror. If you were 10 seconds late, the damn thing sped off and all the occupants ran to the back windows and flipped you off while laughing hysterically as they watched you choke on diesel fumes as you hopelessly chase it. If you were lucky and had lots of wind, you could run full speed over to the next block to attempt an intercept. If you failed, you got to go home to face your Mother. My hat was often the the focal point of a game called "keep away". Riders often puked on the trip, then others would join in. If you spotted your buddy in another seat, as soon as you stood to change seats the driver would stand on the brakes, throwing you to the nasty floor or onto your fellow riders, who would beat you for your poor choice of timing. Some smartass always thought it was cool to flip off the following patrol car, which resulted in your very own version of ADAM-12 and the flipper being dragged off the bus. Have a minor skirmish with the bus bully? The bus came to a skidding halt, the driver then booted (literally) both you and the bully off the bus, where he immediately resumed beating your ass. In winter, the windows immediately frosted over, giving the interior of the bus the appearance of a claustrophobic rolling chest freezer, occupied by forty other frozen victims. In summer, it was a moving microwave oven. The suspension of your bus was made of concrete, which transmitted every bump through the hard plastic seat and directly into your spine. Some asshole would throw something nasty out of a front window, where it would gain velocity and fly back into your window, impacting your face or hair. As I aged so did several sluts who lived on my bus route. Watching porn has its adherents, but watching awkward teenage sex taking place 6 feet from you somehow was not the same thing. I once witnessed a strange form of soccer involving a used sanitary napkin being kicked up and down the aisle of the bus. I finally just gave up on the bus experience and rode my bike to school. Being exposed to traffic was just safer. Drive a bus? Not for any amount of money! Eek

I hated, hated, hated riding the school bus for the accurate summary you wrote. I was the first on the bus and last to get off, living a long way from school.

And the stupid bus route went 10 miles PAST the school, then backtracked to the school.

I was able to drive to school some my senior year. I hated high school as much as I did riding the bus.

DidI go to class reunions ?
HELL NO.

If I missed the bus coming or going, I walked. Maybe 4 or 5 miles as far as my memory/imagination can remember. I was a little guy, between 1st and 5th grade. I enjoyed the walk since it had various detour routes I could take, like cutting through the woods where the bums hung out, empty liquor bottles and other treasures of sorts for an imaginative fellow. Good memories. Same for after school detention, nobody picked me up, walking was good exercise. But back then I don't remember bad guys abducting children, it was a fairly populous area and simpler times, maybe not for the hippies. There were lots of those.

Problem: Drivers must have a clean driving record and no drug use including cannabis.

That excludes a huge number of applicants.

A long time ago, I, my brother and sister were military dependents living in SW Germany where my dad was stationed at a German military base.
The nearest US operated grade school was 3 to 4 hours drive away. The base offered to set us up for a Sunday evening to Friday afternoon boarding school set up. My folks declined and decided to send us to a closer English speaking school located at a Canadian AF base. It was a two hour ride which required us to cross into France in the morning and then back into Germany in the evening. There were several other kids that joined us for the trip on a “short bus which was drives by a French soldier.
One of the problems was the driver spoke French and we all spoke English. Communication was limited and that provides the background of my lasting memory of school bus riding. I watched for an hour as rivulets of little girl pee ran to the back of the bus as the driver accelerated and then reversed course toward the front of the bus as the brakes were applied.

Learned how to spell mayour correctly and earned my first D in my full emersion franchise class.

Very true because it's hard to find truck drivers as well.

Crazy!

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.
