Federal government, USPS, stock market and lots of others are getting a paid day off for the national day of mourning for Jimmy Carter. Before this it was Juneteenth, what's next? Working for a private employer that can't just take any random day off they want does have it's benefits but this isn't one of them.

I was no fan of Carter, but it seems this is protocol in the case of a POTUS. Now, the other days...

National Day of Mourning. Be thankful it's not an official federal holiday, unlike Juneteenth. Q

I was in the Army when Nixon died and they got us into formation to announce it and the next day would be a day off* in commemoration. *Then told us cooks that this didn't apply to us ![]()

For many, it's an unpaid day off. Y'see, the federal government uses a ton of contractors. There are around 1.5x as many federal contractors as there are federal employees. ~4.5M contractors vs ~3M federal employees (not counting military servicemembers). Federal contractors are paid for federal holidays, but unlike federal employees they aren't paid for impromptu days where federal government offices are closed, like snow days or "days of mourning".

No, not like Bill Clinton ![]() |

I'm fine with Juneteenth. The day of mourning I could do without. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

They're going to buy him in Georgia, correct? We certainly don't want to pollute Arlington National Cemetery. _________________________________________________________________________ “A man’s treatment of a dog is no indication of the man’s nature, but his treatment of a cat is. Good, bad, or indifferent...he honorably served as a Naval officer. I disagree with his politics and his policies, but there would be nothing wrong with him being buried at Arlington.

He qualifies: from Arlington's site Anyone who has held elected office in the US government provided they also served in the military and were discharged honorably. Also any Supreme Court Justices, Cabinet Members, Trade Representatives, Attorneys General, Office of Management and Budget Directors, Social Security Commissioners, Drug Policy directors, CIA directors, Chairman of the FED, various deputy secretaries, and ambassadors to NATO, the UN, and a handful of countries. All provided that they served on active duty. Any former President of the United States provided that they served on active duty. (In case you are wondering, both former Presidents Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush would be eligible but former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as President Donald Trump, would not be) _______________________

Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, will be laid to rest on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at the Carter home and garden, part of Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, in Plains, Georgia. He will be buried next to his wife of 77 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

^^^ It's only fitting that he was buried next to Rosalyn. Who wouldn't want to be buried next to your wife, even if you were qualified for Arlington? Q

I read that Biden’s half staff flag order impacts the Inauguration. Picture President Trump taking the oath with all the flags flying at half staff. Looks as several states are ordering a halt on the half staff order “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.
