I think it's an American thing.

I'm pretty sure you aren't in most of Europe as well.

I haven't seen anyone follow this law-- its now red light means go, go faster.
On my commute to work, I have a right turn at a busy intersection with a stop light and not the best visibility. I see 3 reactions:
  • Barely slow down and turn.
  • Complete stop and look for opportunity for right turn. This is me.
  • Complete stop and resume texting until people behind them honk the horn.

Honking gets you the finger around here. Not from me, because I’m not holding up the parade.

The opposite is the dope that stops at a red light where you can legally make a right turn and just sits there like a dope until the light turns green despite the fact, the cars in front of them turned, there's no oncoming traffic or pedestrians anywhere in sight.

Five states—Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington—permit left turns on red onto a one-way street from both one-way and two-way streets.

It doesn't happen often - most people wait for the light to turn green anyway.

Indeed they do; it can be a bit frustrating since I know the law and the person in front at the light obviously doesn't. But we shall persevere nevertheless. Big Grin

Our local Diverging Diamond (as featured in a recent thread) has two lanes coming to a light when exiting the expressway for those that want to go left. At that point the diamond is one way <--- so you can turn left On Red but I would say over 50% of drivers don't realize that. I didn't at first either.

One of my absolute pet peeves is I'm approaching a stop sign and I want to turn right so I start drifting that way. The car in front does the same only enough that I can't squeeze by, and then turns on the left turn signal. That drives me crazy insane, and it happens a lot here.
