I built a home for my MIL in 2001 after my FIL passed away so she could be close to us. After she passed we have been renting it out and have been very fortunate that we have had the same family there for over 10 years and have never given us any problems.

BUT

When I see a call coming through on my phone it’s usually not good news and sure enough the outdoor unit is freezing up. So I call the HVAC company that I used to deal with and they send someone over within a few hours. Well, the refrigerant is indeed low but of course that type is no longer used or available and, blah, blah, blah since the unit is 22 years old it would be better in the long run to go ahead and replace it.

I told the service tech to have my old sales guy call me to quote a price and a couple of hours later he calls. We shoot the bull for a few minutes and I tell him that I just want a basic single speed 3 ton Heat pump like a Goodman or other comparable brand. He says let me look into it and he’ll call me early next week with pricing. So the question is what does the SF hive think it will cost to replace a 3 ton heat pump with a basic (14.3 SEER2) system?

Thanks for playing!

We had a new Goodman 3 ton, 16 SEER, installed about four years ago. When I get home, I'll look and see what we paid for it.

Shop around and find a company that can refill the refrigerant, it's out there, when the daughters stopped cooling we got the "it's old" "no coolant, can't get it" need to buy new, they pushed hard and we pushed them out the door.

Found a small local outfit, one guy, he has the goods, refilled it and said if it happens again, call him...

Few hundred beats several grand

3 ton, probably in the $7000 range.

Refrigerant is still available.
Not to mention the several available replacement refrigerants.

Make damn sure its NOT just a plugged air filter!

As to cost, without specific installation requirements, location and local cost of living, variables are too much to quote a price.
Want a big ballpark answer, $5-8 k+.

$2,196 before tax. Free shipping, does not include installation.

At least that's what Home Essentials on Amazon sells them for.

After 22 years, time for a new one. I replaced the furnace and AC both in my old house. In winter, it saved me about 400 bucks a month on gas. Don't know about electricity, we never ran the air, we just sweated.

I'm going to say about $12,000 if they had to replace the air handler too
