When it did become the normal response to respond to every fucking question with “that’s a great question”? Really? Every question is a great question? It’s not true and it’s annoying. Closely followed by its equally annoying sibling, “thanks for the question”. Umm, your welcome? It’s a fucking interview/press conference. It’s all about questions then answers. Usually in that order. Ugh.

It allows time to think about the response…or in the case of politics, to formulate the lie.

True yet still annoying.

I was watching SportsCenter. They asked some Mexican guy who I assume is a soccer coach how the USWNT will view their legacy after their earliest exit ever from the World Cup. That’s a great question. First off I bet he knew what the question was going to be already. It’s an annoying affectation. Just stop. Just answer the question.

You're NOT welcome. Just answer my f***ing yes/no question with either YES or NO.

Just like “bless your heart” means the opposite, this too means “Your question sucks so let me think of an answer here”.

Years ago, when I taught classes re The C Programming Language, and UNIX-related stuff, I would tell the class "There's no such thing as a dumb question."

I lied.

If it's a politician, it usually means
"I'm a lying, cheating, stealing asshole, and just wait for the line of bullshit I'm about to feed you, yet not really answer your question!"

Oh you are so welcome. lol

I get it during Congressional hearings. Stupid easy way to eat up time. So transparent but still eats up the clock. Somehow it has translated into normal interviews and q/a’s though. Ugh. Again

A similar and equally annoying variation is "I'm glad you brought that up..."

Of course you're glad. You anticipated that question and had a canned response ready to go. Roll Eyes

Every time they give that limp-wristed response it uses up the senators time, meaning they will have to concoct fewer bull shit responses. If the hot seat occupant does that with say, 15 questions and plays Jose-fuckaround on each for 5 or 10 seconds that's a minute or a minute and a half that he doesn't have to worry about getting xerself indicted.

yep, the old reporter secret was to ask a 'yes or no' question like,

Senator, do you still beat your wife?

Guilty of using "That's a great question" in the classroom. I only use it when a student asks a question that I know the answer to! If they ask a question that I don't know the answer to I say, "let's not get ahead of ourselves, we'll cover this in class next week".

Daily I answer the phone at our shop and the first thing out of the caller's mouth is "I have a quick question" To which I immediately reply "I have a quick answer".
