Yes, that title is written with a full dose of sarcasm.

A week or so ago, I was cleaning up the random parts and bits lying around, and put them away like a responsible person. Trying to do the right thing, right?

Well, that’s great. Maybe even admirable. Except today, I’m making laps between upstairs and downstairs, looking for a replacement barrel that’s been sitting around here for a month. It’s a fairly big item, right? It’s not as though it would roll up under the recliner and hide from me. And I can’t figure out where the heck it is. In the closet? Nope. In the shop? Nope, haven’t seen it there (yet). Hey, how about the safe! Maybe I put it in there! <BUZZ!!> Nuh-uh, not in there.

Moving on…

How about those two slings that sat on the table at the end of the couch for way too long? Where the heck did those go? Only the man in the moon knows at this point, I figure. Or the gremlins who moved them while I wasn’t looking. Because I went looking for them last night, and found nothing but dust bunnies. In the shop? Nope. In the office? Nope. Closet, bedroom, even the kitchen! Nope. Finding them is not happening today, vthoky!

How ‘bout that roll of green wire I need for a project this weekend? Looked in the shop, in the office, in the garage, even in the supply cabinet in my office at work. Poof! Spool of green wire just went ghost on me!

What the heck, man? I get why I just leave things lying around sometimes… it’s so I can find them! Put stuff away and tidy up like a fella ought to? Go right ahead, man, but you’ll spend dozens of hours later on looking for them.

I am the same way…I have piles in my shop. And I pretty much know what’s where.

Put something away…gone!

The kicker? I’ll spend hours looking for it and not find it, rebuy the damn thing, and then find it afterwards!

Two weeks ago I had a new bed delivered. I moved some stuff out of the way for the delivery guys, including a couple books and a pair of nail clippers and a spare magazine for my nightstand pistol. I KNOW I put it all in one pile in the next room. The books and the clipper found there way back where they belong later that day. But the magazine? Nowhere to be found. Yeah I have a few more, but still...

The slings I could forgive, easy to roll up & 'forget'
A barrel, that's a tough one.

I'm the worst at this. I can be holding something in my hand, get interrupted, set it down, and 3 minutes later won't remember where I put it. Thankfully, I'm married to a wonderful woman with superpowers...I kid you not, my wife can find anything, even parts that she doesn't even know what they are. And usually she doesn't even have to look...I just ask, "hey, have you seen..." And she's like "yeah it's over on the counter/couch/workbench, right where you left it." It's amazing.

I found the barrel late last night, in the closet (one of the places I had suspected) and underneath a backpack ("why's this pack here?").

So, of course, I dug around further to see if I had put the slings there too. So far, no luck.

I think if I had a month off work and a rented dumpster, I could be a lot more organized. Wink

Lol

My wife did the same when prepping for the open house…

Now she can’t find anything.

It bugs me to no end when I cant find my highly valuable crap. And I will relentlessly search for it. I used to cut the grass for my elderly neighbors and used my Leatherman to adjust the mower motor. The Leatherman then disappeared. A year of fruitless search ensued. Until I was trimming weeds at the neighbors and the cutting back revealed the Leatherman lying on a concrete wall next to where I worked on the mower the year before. That was a load off my mind! And yes, I had bought a new one to replace the one I lost!

Ready to snicker?

After searching this house like a dog sniffing out a treat last night, and finally finding the barrel... know what else I didn't find? (Yes, the slings are still missing.)

The shop! That's right. The gun shop I was aiming to visit with the barrel this morning (to ask about getting it Cerakoted) has evidently moved... there's a gym in its place now.

Mine on the other hand doesn’t have the faintest clue or care about what I’m looking for.
I could show her a picture and if it’s about gun stuff, her brain glazes over and the eyes go blank.

Ask her a medical question and she can unfurl knowledge like a *Pro from Dover. Gun stuff, she couldn’t care less.

*MASH movie reference for us older guys.

I am good for this daily. I think our wives must be related too. She’s a bloodhound for my stuff. I haven’t misplaced my wallet or keys in years, but a pencil or pair of work gloves…. Roll Eyes

I seem to have the opposite problem . I finally got my workbench cleared off and things put away . Almost overnight , it has gone to full blown chaos in the garage. The floor in front of the bench is cluttered and the workbench is a shambles . I had a set of metric sockets open and partially scattered and I couldn't remember why they were even out. Every time I pass through I pick up a few things and put them away but it's not going to stay organized .
