No offense intended.

Any wedge, or similar tight fitting material, placed in the hammer slot, should preferably be steel or other non-compressible material. Especially if the part is MIM (which doesn't like flexure at all). I've found a set feeler gauges can come in handy for this as it can be adjusted for a tight fit.

That’s no doubt true, and is therefore why worrying about breaking the hammer when removing/installing the pin is probably unnecessary. I cannot imagine that if hammers were breaking in the process that we wouldn’t have heard of the problem.
