I couldn't even get past the "carry on, carry on" part as he was trying too hard on the vocals for me. Acoustic guitar had no bottom end. I can't stand that style of "singing" myself.

That's a song that shouldn't be covered unless you really have your shit together. IMO, he didn't have his shit together.

I gave it ten seconds.

Queen is one of those bands that should not be covered, unless a totally different song is made. Like if Tom Waits did a rendition of Tie You Mother Down, or something. A note for note rendition is not my cup of tea, that is why I don't like "tribute bands"; I'd rather listen to the original. I usually don't like covers unless it becomes the song for the band covering it. You Really Got Me by Van Halen is a good example, or Satisfaction by DEVO.

If you aren’t Freddie Mercury, you shouldn’t be trying to cover Queen songs unless you’re singing in your shower or your car. It’s the same reason you’ve never seen a live band do a cover of a Boston song, and you never will. Those vocal harmonies were a perfect storm, on both counts.

I watched a documentary a while back where they played the vocal-only tracks and split out the four vocal parts of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Plenty of folks think that’s all Freddie in multiple takes, but it’s the band live in the studio, all four members. Freddie wasn’t the only guy in the group that could really sing.

I think that's why I don't see too many Marvin Gaye covers.

I dunno... While I agree that most folks fall short of Queen when trying to cover Bohemian Rhapsody, I think Panic! At The Disco gave it an excellent crack.

(It helps that Brandon Urie has a vocal range that rivals Freddie Mercury.)

Before it gets too contentious in here, I’m not saying it can’t be done, just that your average cover is not even mediocre but generally cringe-worthy. Anyone can cover Jimmy Buffet, but know your limits, you know?

Do, or do not. There’s is no “try.” I have a Kevin Bacon-level connection to Butch Walker, who can not only nail the vocal parts, but the fucking guitar solo as well. Trying to find the video I saw years ago where he smashed it live playing through the amp I now own. Anyone that can do a respectable Freddie Mercury AND Brain May in the same song live more than has my respect.

pretty cool it was with a Church group

not saying it matches Mr. Mercury - but they are honorable renditions

He's trying to sing somewhere between Steven Tyler and Axl Rose and it just isn't working for him or the song.

I don't think the guitar playing is bad.

Reading the comments on the video Mark123 posted, apparently that guy, Marc Martel, sang some of the vocals for the Bohemian Rhapsody movie.
