Prisoners in New York will be issued free tablets under new contract

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - Under a new state contract, all inmates in New York State prisons will receive free tablets.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is partnering with JPay, a company that specializes in inmate and corrections-related services. JPay is providing the tablets at no cost to the state or inmates, and DOCCS is not taking commissions for the tablets.

The tablets will be preloaded with educational content, and DOCCS plans to make additional services available through the tablets, such as Prison Rape Elimination Act reporting, Grievance filing, and the potential for placing commissary orders.

The tablets will not be able to connect to the internet, but inmates will be able to use the tablets to purchase music, e-books, videos, and other entertainment. They will also be able to connect to aa secure e-mail system to communicate with family and friends as approved by DOCCS.

State corrections officials say they believe using the tablets will help inmates stay in touch with their families and be better prepared to reenter into the community.

Porno mags would be cheaper.

(and THAT's why NY wouldn't do that. We don't do cheaper, we waste maximum tax dollars at all times)

Actually, I am ok with this as it is described.

It says they cant connect to the internet and there is no cost to the taxpayer. No reason inmates shouldn’t be given the opportunity to get educated and make something positive come from their incarceration.

Also, with secure email communication I’d imagine it could cut down on contraband that comes in via regular mail.

Keeps them busy, less trouble making as well

Just saw a great story where a convicted gangsta confessed to a homicide on a facebook live feed.
With a contraband cell phone.
From his cell in Federal Prison.
New York Corrections evidently missed that news item.

Good. All visitation will be by video on the tablets. No contact visits. All correspondence will be through the tablets. No physical mail comes into the prisons. All books and periodicals come in electronic form. Again no physical objects coming in and moving around. This wouldn't eliminate contraband coming in (there are other ways, including bribing guards to bring it in.) But it would significantly cut it down.

This is a gov't operation, some politician or bureaucrat is making money on the deal.

Me too, because I neither live in New York nor do I care what moronic lunacy they come with next to waste taxpayer money.

Based on their website, I'm guessing the tablets are free but using them cost money.

The inmates and/or their loved ones. JPay makes a lot of coin being the phone vendor for lots of correctional facilities. You wanna talk to family on the outside or you want your family to talk to you on the inside, y’all have to have JPay account.

I am so happy I left NY’s socialist suck hole in 2016. The state has like a 4 billion dollar budget deficit but publicized they want to provide free tablets to criminals and free college tuition to DACA illegals

So exactly who is paying for all those tablets?

IMO, just more liberal horse pucky from the commies in charge of NY state.

And all those "feel good" justifications for this lunacy do nothing to actually address the FACT that prison is supposed to be a PUNISHMENT.

We lived about 75 miles from NYC back in 1977. Spent 9 relatively awful years there.

That whole NYC region is one huge shit hole which was proven to me when I had to spend 5 months in NYC going to IBM school in the center of the city. There were about 20 of us attending class and we were cautioned many times about going out alone at night.

We cashed our expense checks at the bank below where we went to class. I was amused to note that they had LEO presence in that bank whenever it was open. And that was at Penn station.
