the grape vine here in tiny town is now saying that the tree that made all the damage was in the process of being cut down.

it was past ready to be cut down, because of disease, but the fellers were mostly to blame,

all damaged was insured

We had a white oak off the NW corner of the house. It was a beautiful. One winter it developed a frost crack. We paid professionals to come out and bolt it. While they were at it they trimmed-out the center (lowers wind load) and cabled it.

All for naught. Eventually the tree started looking "odd" around the base, as if it was trying to come out of the ground, and began to lean toward the house. Eventually we had to admit it had to go

Dropping a tree on a house, btw, is inexcusable. When they took that big ol' mature oak not more than 10-15' from our home down, they did it by limbing it as they climbed, then topping it, in sections, as they descended.

When they did the limbs with branches over the house, they took those out bits at a time. Same with the limbs that had garden or bushes under them.

Same crew did the same thing when they took down a failing big ol' wild cherry tree just 25-30' off the patio.

Taking the whole thing out in one go sounds like fun, and it is--when you get it right. I dropped a small, dead tree right where I planned it just last week. But trees can be funny. Sometimes stuff doesn't fall where you plan. And this tree, if I'd gotten it wrong, couldn't have done any damage that mattered no matter where it fell.
