A friend is going in for Cancer surgery and wanted to do quick trip. I'm in charge of ideas/lodging and chose Pahrump, NV for the base. First full day we headed to Death Valley, only made a couple of stops, Zabriskie Pt and Badwater Basin.

Second day we went to Beatty, NV, visited the ghost town of Rhyolite and was pleasantly surprised to find the adjacent Goldwell Outdoor Gallery.

The Cook Bank Building, built in 1907, the bank went out of business in 1910.

"The Last Supper" with "Lady Desert" in the background.

"1000 and 1" Cranes" and "Lady Desert - Venus of Nevada"

Coming from the Midwest ,it took me a while to
"warm up" to the deserts out west.

But on the third camping trip , the
greatness found me. You are not
looking for the same stuff.

They can be every bit as enjoyable, . . . If
You can tweak your perspective enough

We moved West from NJ, I had spent 40+ years around and on the ocean. Several times after moving here I commented to my wife how the vastness of the desert reminds me of the ocean. On this trip we had two vehicles, my friend and his wife in one, after a day driving around the Mohave my friend commented the same thing. I totally get your experience.

I hope your friend's surgery goes well. Best wishes for a good prognosis.

Interesting pics. Perhaps I'll visit someday.

The friend is Doris, that you met when we got together. Thanks for the support. Death Vally is huge, not sure how I'd approach it, probably just in pieces. We had great weather, perfect time to be there, I'd pass on Summer.

I was going back through my photos and came across this one. The pointy formation is called Manly Beacon. After getting home I learned so much about this area, I have to get back!

There is something cathartic being in those high desert areas.

We went to Pharump, where you go to hump, they were top speed testing a Koenigsegg Agera RS, hit a two way top speed of 277.

Figured by the time we rode over there we'd get to see a timed speed run since they never go perfect on the first run, well this one did.

Nevada 160 is one of those made for movies/tv roads, straight up into the sky....

The lady in the pictures is my wife. The friend did have her operation on 1/21 and is doing great. Got a way to go with infusions to make sure she stays cancer free. Thanks for the wishes for her.

I loved 160 the desert here is just so different than the high desert where I live. Taking Bella Vista Rd to Death Valley was all eye candy, the formations and colors are amazing. A visit to Spring Mountain should be included in our next trip.

Three things I will never forget about Death Valley.
A. The worst wind, rain, lightening thunder storm of 16vyears of camping

B. The 4 x 8 foot sign reading
Coyotes 4 pet dogs 0.

C. Being the target for sonic boom fly
by. And hitting my head on the cab roof.

Thanks, for the comments, the Southwest really is amazing. I've met hundreds of people since moving here and only a few don't get it, "Is there anything but rock?". I converted the color photo of Manly Beacon to B&W and had it printed on Fuji Pearl Paper, came out great.
