So, who's bright idea was it to start making 45s with small pistol primers, and why do they do it?

I think it's just to mess with us, I don't buy new brass or ammo, I reload what I have. In picking up my brass at the range I invariably get some small primmer ones from other people mixed in. I'm reloading 45s now and get a stoppage when one of the small primer ones slips through... Very frustrating... WTH...

Some sort is in order. Look at the bright side, separate them, if needed you could use SP primers should your large supply run short.

Yeah, I’d try to identify before you get to the priming stage.

Could the small primers be lead-free? I thought they only make lead-free in small primers because I have shot at a range that required lead-free. I only shot 9mm there a time or two.

The original .45 Small was for lead-free. The mix is hot and expensive so they didn't want to use any more than they had to. I think there is styphnate .45 Small just because it is convenient.

I just got my first 45ACP, and I went out of my way to get only small primer brass while gearing up to reload it.

Why? Because I have tons of SPP and SRP, even LRP, but no LPP because I've never needed them before. There's no way I'm going to A) spend money on getting EVEN MORE primers, and B) change the priming mechanism on my LnL AP to work with large primers for only one caliber.

You need more guns...10mm, 45Colt, 44-40, 38-40, not to mention the most powerful cartridge in the world that will blow your head clean off... And when you start picking up your brass you will get some with LPP and have my issue, only in reverse...

Yeah I look at them as I fill the loader but a few slip by my old eyes, slows things down because I'm easy on the lever in case I have a small one in there...don't want to have an AD-(primer pop) when seating a primer.

I load in volume, many thousands and then I'm done for a while. I have a coffee can of the small ones and will load them separate and use them in places I won't pick up the brass, the woods, snow and etc...

Everyone needs more guns. Wink I'm working on it.

I already have this issue in a way, because I have large and small pocket brass for 308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm waiting for Alpha to release some 6GT brass in LRP so I can burn some of my supply. The secret is a sort, though we all know stuff can and will slip through every now and then.

I admit I'll end up with large primers (in fact, I already have some LPP 45 brass). But right now supply prices are abhorrent and I'd rather burn my present stash and get shooting than sit on the gun for a year until I get afford to shoot it. Besides, I paid like $30 for 500 SPP 45ACP cases at Terminal Munitions. So I'm set for a very long time (once I get bullets, anyway).

yea that kind of throws me off as well when I see them. Everyone of mine has the headstamp of federal on them. I just put them aside with the other SPP, figured maybe some day I will have enough to load them

It’s annoying. I’ve even found a few SPP 10mm cases.

I need the separator that jmorris built. It would check the primer pockets for size, and kick the small ones out.

Or something like this, https://www.1911forum.com/thre...imer-sorter.1065435/.

I’ve been lucky that I’ve spotted all the SPP before trying to load but I’d like to have a supply for options.

Would this fall into a subcategory of the phrase:

"Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it"???
