So Mrs. 94hokie needs new pepper spray. This is primarily for morning walks, sometimes in a state park fairly isolated. Previously have used Fox Labs and wanted to check with the collective to see if that’s still the choice or is there now something else. Thanks in advance.

My only experience is with First Defense since it's my issued OC. I've been hit with it, and it sucks...

Interestingly I just listened to Primary and Secondary podcast today about pepper spray and the guest Chuck Haggard who gave a really good bit info. Might be worth a listen. It’s long but I was on a flight. He recommended Pom and Sabre. Most of the stuff marketed to ladies with frilly bling and such is junk as you might guess.

Chuck knows his stuff and teaches a really good instructor class for pepper spray.

POM is very well respected amongst people i really trust

Sabre Red is good.

I carry Fox Labs as does my wife and believe it to be as good as the above

This has gotten me to thinking that I really need to upgrade my various sprays. I really couldn’t tell you what I have and if it’s still in date. I’ve had the Pom web site open on my phone for a while. Now I need to check out Fox Labs too.

Brad, what size do you carry?

My first OC was Sabre Red until the sprayer twisted on and sprayed my leg. POM is much better in this respect in that you have to flip open the lid before it will spray. POM is what I carry now.

Fox Labs is the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in my life. It's the only thing I've ever been sprayed with that completely shut me down. I'd rather be tased. At least that is over quickly.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like Fox is still a solid choice so I will be ordering new flip top stream. Many years ago someone suggested I get slightly sprayed - just so you know what to expect - and I foolishly did it. That was not fun.

I carry the 1.5 oz on my keychain as does the wife. It's a stream. Fog is bad due to blow back. You want to minimize that happening and the stream style really mitigates that.

Sabre Pepper gel. Cant wipe it off (not that you really can with spray anyway) and blow back is almost non existent.

Hopefully relevant enough to be included, for those that carry the sprays, what is the trigger on your device (flap, trigger etc) and how/where do you carry it?

My favorite formulas are Counter Assault OC-10 Zarc International's Capstun. Either in a fogger type formula, so the attacker gets it in his throat, lungs, eyes, and nasal passages. Yes, as an inflammatory agent these cause a lot of pain to the attacker, but also inflames the mucus membranes which diminishes breathing ability to some degree. OC10 and Capstun are good stuff!

I still like Fox Labs. And I will always take the areosol cone over stream. yes there may be more risk of blowback but I think the easier targeting and better results are worth it.

Our prison system did away with gel because inmates would fling it back at staff.

DefTec First Defense .2% Aerosol. I carry it in an open top pouch at 4 o’clock.

My agency (and me in particular) has a lot of deployment data on it. We are very strong believers in OC and very judicious in its use as it often saves people from much more physically demanding uses of force.

I’ve probably used it 2 or 3 dozen times, including twice where I suffered a direct hit, one of those including a direct hit to DaBigBR too (sorry man). In both of those cases the intended target also got greased and I was really no worse for the wear.

I find it is real hot spicy shit and tough to deal with if you’re not prepared for it or expecting it (I.E. the bad guy) but it is very easy to decontaminate. In both instances of my self exposure, I was back to patrol in 15 minutes or so.
