I loved Fawlty Towers!

“There were only 12 episodes – but every one was nigh-on perfect.

So much so that Fawlty Towers, the 1970s show that gave us the immortal lines ‘don’t mention the war’ and ‘he’s from Barcelona’, has been named the greatest British sitcom of all time.

The comedy, starring John Cleese and set in a seaside hotel in Torquay, pipped Father Ted and I’m Alan Partridge to be crowned the winner in a Radio Times showdown…”

John Cleese’s expressions were epic.

At my niece’s wedding there came up the ethnicity of the groom’s parents...German, they said.
My quick response “Don’t mention the waah” received a well-deserved round of laughter from all.

We loved Fawlty Towers, but the Britcom I found funniest was Chef. Have never been able to find Chef anywhere again. (Except on over-priced DVD.)

"There is too much butter on those trays."

"Que?"

"There is too much butter... On. Those. Trays."

"No no no senor, not on-those-trays, no sir. It's uno, dos, tres; uno, dos tres."

"No, no, no. Hay mucho burro allí."

"Que?"

Hay mucho burro allí!"

"Ah, mantequilla! Burro is hee-haw. Hee-haw hee-haw."

At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind."

That was the best of the revised signs, by far(t)!

I did too. One of the characters was a middle aged lady, Mrs Slocombe, who had a cat, which she referred to as a pussy. She uttered lines such as:

Last night there was a strange scratching at my door. The hair on my pussy stood straight up!

Much lower key than Fawlty, Monty Python, etc. But I liked "The Last of the Summer Wine". Not super funny, but it was still very enjoyable.

IIRC it was Her Majesty the Queens favorite TV Series too.

"Monty Python was a bit like SNL not everything was gold, some of the skits were absolute stinkers. But there were so many great skits. I like Fawlty but I think Monty Python was better overall.
