What Is The Best Christmas Carol/Scrooge Movie?

I told my wife, I want to add this to our Christmas rotation.

I seem to remember a 1970s version when I was a kid was pretty good.

I know there’s a 1950s version and there’s a 1980s version with George C Scott and then I believe there was one with Patrick Stewart?

What is considered the best and most accurate adaptation?

We just got done watching the movie The Man Who Invented Christmas about how Charles Dickens was inspired to write A Christmas Carol in the first place. I did not realize at that time in England it was really a minor holiday and not a big deal and it was the Victorians who brought it back to what we know of Christmas today.

My favorite is the Alastair Sim version from 1951. I have YouTube grab it every year and I watch it at least twice every season.

I don't know about accuracy, but I grew up watching the George C. Scott and Disney (Mickey's) versions. I like those in adulthood as a result.

Muppets. Gotta be the Muppets version.

The Patrick Stewart version was a made for TV movie from the late 1990s, and it's excellent.

I knew you were smart but, damn that's off the charts. I love this version. Michael Caine acts the living shit out of that part.

But if the Muppets give you heartburn, the George C. Scott version kills it as well.

We watched the Patrick Stewart version and thought it was pretty good. Apparently it’s the only one that uses whole passages from the book without any changes in several scenes.

I think we may try the George C Scott and Alastair Sim versions this season too.

My fave is Alastair Sim 1951. It's free on Tubi! I mean, it is the version playing on the TV in Lethal Weapon that Gary Busey heartlessly blasts with his XM177 carbine, after all.

I also liked the 1970 musical Scrooge with Albert Finney. That was one of the first movies I saw in the theater as a young child. I remember being freaked out when the Ghost of Christmas Future takes Scrooge to hell. I had forgotten which movie that imagery was in until I saw it decades later as an adult.

I enjoy all of them, but will also cast my vote for the '51 version with Alastair Sim. We have it on Blu-Ray and watch it every year.
