When I was a kid, a local (argentina) famous comics writer published “El Eternauta”. Maybe another alien invasion story, who can tell? Fact is that El Eternauta became iconic in my country.
The writer and his family went “ missing” under the military Juntas of the 70s/80s and over decades all those trying to bring El Eternauta to the screen failed for likely economic reasons and having the writer’s family wiped out made securing the story rights impossible.
This bothered Mr. Spielberg little or nothing as he produced Falling Skies. IMO, a disgusting rip off of our national comic hero. Imagine us messing with Superman. Similarities between El Eternauta and Falling Skies are too many to count as coincidence.
Anyhow, Netflix produced and just released El Eternauta (6 episodes series) here in Argentina. The original story was written before the 60s so it has been lightly adapted to our times. It’s dark, depressing. Feels realistic and moved me to tears. Locations and people are familiar and it marvels me to realise what an achievement this is. This is where and when i grew up, set in a catastrophic situation.
I enjoyed Fallen Skies very much but it always felt i was dealing with stolen goods.
If you have access to it on Netflix, i recommend it. Remember, this was a comic, published between 1957 and 1959, the year i was born.
