My wife watched The Sands of Iwo Jima with me last week and really enjoyed it. One of his better movies I think. I think his best work was The Quiet Man however.
Icarus flew too close to the sun, but at least he flew.

Two John Wayne fans went to see one of his westerns. One of them said to the other, "In this next scene, he's going to come around that bend in the trail and fall off his horse."
"What? Never! The Duke won't fall off his horse!"
"Want to bet? Twenty dollars?"
The bet was made, The Duke came riding around the bend, and fell off his horse.
First guy said, "Ah, that's OK. I really can't take your money. I knew that he was going to fall off his horse because I saw this movie before."
Other guy said, "Yeah, I saw it before, too. But I just couldn't believe that The Duke would fall off his horse twice!

I enjoyed most of John Wayne's works (many of which were already mentioned) but recently came upon one I don't remember seeing before.
Tall in the Saddle was from 1944 with Gabby Hayes, Ward Bond, Ella Raines, and Audrey Long. It's a western with a mystery with Wayne playing Rocklin, a stranger arriving in town trying to determine who killed Red Cardell. Ella Raines plays tom-boyish grit but oozes sex appeal and Audrey Long counters with femininity and sophistication. Guess who's caught in the middle. Catch the B&W original if you can rather than the colorized version.

Love John Ford's the cavalry trilogy -- Ft. Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. Besides the Duke, you had Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond, and Harry Carey Jr in what essentially a stock company. I make my wife crazy, since she says I know all of the dialogue from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (and still watch it when ever it is on, which unfortunately is not often any more).
