Anybody miss Ektachrome?

Crap, I forgot that!

Dad bought the big rolls of Tri X and we loaded the. Into the 35mm cans… Taught me developing and printing in our basement darkroom, and that led to school paper and yearbook in junior high and high school. Which led to a completely “do it yourself schedule” which I of course abused horribly.

But regardless, I treasure the learning I got about pushing and pulling film through the development process, and still maintain there is no better all around black and white film than Tri X.

Tri X, used that 3-1 vs Fujichrome. I really liked B&W photography.

I don’t miss Ektachrome because 50-60 years after shooting, the color is very faded compared to Kodachrome.
I used Agfa when I lived in Berlin, but it always had a bluish cast; maybe I was used to the vibrant Kodachrome colors.
I did a little Cibachrome printing back in the 70’s. Making those vibrant color prints was very satisfying; and knowing the dyes would last longer than other print processes was very comforting.
Then I got busy with medical practice and never did any more darkroom work, although I had a lovely Minolta enlarger.

CIBACHROME!!!!

That was it. I'd just given up on the memory. Process rather than film type. Duh.

Had to send that out to print as well, but the images hold up amazingly well.

I have a picture from college yearbook cover I shot hanging that was printed on Cibachrome circa 1987. Still looks great.

There is a camera app called Firstlight that simulates different film processes from years ago. They do not have Ektachrome but they do have different ones like Kodachrome, some C41 processing, Fuji Velvia 100, etc. and you can also play around with adding different levels of grain to your photos. $8 a year, maybe something you'd like to play around with. https://www.filmicpro.com/prod...stlight/simulations/

While Ektachrome was good I went to Ektar 25 and then Portra 120.

I have a few prints made of great horned owls shot with Ektar 25, and the ability to make insanely large prints was incredible.

I always liked Kadachrome the best, and I used to work at a place that developed it.....the ONLY other place than Kodak that developed it.

I got into black and white developing. But I much prefer being able to print pictures without needing a laboratory of chemicals.
