Even if they left it ambiguous in the first episode, his emotional outburst at the end of the fifth episode cemented it. Synths don't have emotions.

(Though if he were an android, that wouldn't stop a xenomorph from attacking. See Bishop's fate in Aliens. Synths can't be hosts for facehuggers, but they can still be attacked/killed by xenomorphs.)

They even all look alike, which you have to assume at this point is purposeful... short black/dark brown semi-curly hair, slim/slight build, etc.
