What was up with the creepy Asian navigator?
I thought he was an android, which made the xenopmorph attack very odd.
Teng is not an android. He's just a creepy human. Possibly autistic. Potentially a pervert/sex offender.
Per the showrunner Noah Hawley:
“It’s always open to interpretation, and that’s the fun of that franchise — who is an android and who isn’t?” Hawley said. “At a certain point, you start to question everybody. But yeah, for me, he’s a creepy dude... I will say, in the old days, they used to say, ‘The army or prison,’ you know? And I think in this case, they might have said, ‘Space ship or prison,’ right?” he added. “Clearly he is a dangerous person to be on a spaceship with and just super creepy.”Even if they left it ambiguous in the first episode, his emotional outburst at the end of the fifth episode cemented it. Synths don't have emotions.
(Though if he were an android, that wouldn't stop a xenomorph from attacking. See Bishop's fate in
Aliens. Synths can't be hosts for facehuggers, but they can still be attacked/killed by xenomorphs.)

As is tradition for
Alien female main characters, in the vein of Ripley, Call, and Rain. And now Wendy/Marcy.
They even all look alike, which you have to assume at this point is purposeful... short black/dark brown semi-curly hair, slim/slight build, etc.
