I watched this new release with my wife the other day and we loved it almost as much as "The Queen's Gambit"! The fictional story is about a 17 year old girl, who's parents and older brother are deaf. The girl works on the family commercial fishing boat with her dad and brother, while on her way to completing high school. Her family wants her to continue working on the boat, but her heart is somewhere else. She loves to sing and has talent enough that a music teacher/mentor wants her to try out for a scholarship at well respected music academy.

All three members of her family are played by deaf actors (Marlee Maitlin plays her mother) and do a stunning job, even though there's literally only ONE word spoken by any of them in the production. While the story shows difficulties faced by the deaf, it's not simply a "poor me" depiction. It realistically portrays a family dynamic that is anything but black and white. The end result is a film that might bring tears to your eyes, but in a good way. You'll relate to these characters, and appreciate them for their humanity. It's so good to see Marlee Maitlin in a quality production again and though she's a supporting character, she brings her talents to the forefront as she did in "Children of a Lesser God" and provides an exceptional presence.

CODA (stands for "Children Of Deaf Adults"), is available for free on AppleTV only (AFAIK), but can also be seen in selected local theaters.

It sounded interesting. Trying to watch it now with the wife but she keeps getting phone calls and now it getting too late for her so maybe tomorrow...

We really enjoyed the movie. Funny, touching, uplifting, and a tear jerker. Best we have seen in a long time.

This is why I don’t like seeing a movie for the first time at home. It’s too distracting. And I include myself as a culprit.

Set phones, tablets, etc. to Do Not Disturb?

Two things recently occurred that have caused me to reevaluate my use of tech toys. The first was at the gym. A hot young girl was being trained by a boyfriend or father (it was a close call--could've gone either way). Whenever I looked her way and she was on a machine that would allow it (e.g.: leg extension), she'd have her nose buried in her phablet. I don't do that. (I don't even carry my phone on the floor at the gym.) But it did get me to thinking about how I do use my devices. Then, a few days later, Apple announced their on-device spyware. These two things, taken together, have led me to making an effort to distance myself from this stuff.
