Just watched the Mongolian episode.......John is BAD ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hampster and May did a great job on it; other than the sterring wheel issue at beginning and blowing a fuse, it didn't break down once. I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!

That trip looked harder on them than the North Pole trip.

In honor of the Mongolian episode and John The Mongolian Pony, The HU "Wolf Totem":

Other than the TG Bolivian episode, the Mongolia adventure ranks second supplanting the Botswana episode. This was by far the best TGT episode, even going so far to break the fourth wall.

I wonder if this is where John came from?

Interesting trivia off of IMDB
quote:
Full spec of the self-assembly car; Land Rover 300 TDi engine, Land Rover R380 manual gearbox, Land Rover LT230 transfer box with permanent four-wheel-drive and high/low range, bespoke ladder frame chassis, and leaf spring suspension.

quote:
The self-assembly car has hydrostatic steering which works off hydraulics rather than a mechanical link, hence the mixed-up hydraulic pipes causing the back-to-front steering problem.

quote:
The presenters were lucky to see camels. Wild Bactrian camels are critically endangered with only about 1400 thought to be left in the world, mostly in the Lop Nur National Nature Reserve in China and the Great Gobi Protected Area in Mongolia.

quote:
James correctly identifies the engine in one of the crates as from a Land Rover. Specifically, it's a 300 TDi which is a 2.5-litre turbo diesel four cylinder making 111 horsepower, as used in the Defender, Discovery and original Range Rover.

So that’s it for the show as it has been all these years?
They’re tired of just driving and talking about cars.
There will be specials because they still haven’t seen every place in the world.
I’m surprised it took only three seasons of The Grand Tour, and apparently it’s their call.

No, the show goes on, but no more tent/track test portion. Just touring with cars...

Mongolia show was good, the Johnny Truck/Car/Thing was pretty cool, a first for them a vehicle that worked without too much of an issue.

I'll miss the track and banter of chat, on Conversation Street, but the tours are what most folks seem to like.

Imagine its pretty difficult to keep up the schedule and be creative.

Doesn't seem like 3 seasons ago...

they've been doing the show for 17 years - thats a pretty good run in anyone's books

I like the idea of the tours - they seem to excel at that with the adventures and the photography

Was touching that Clarkson, the ever cynical smart-alec, got choked-up and had to take a few breaths to compose himself.

While the travel episodes are the most desired and enjoyable, I wonder if there was something more to it. Like Clarkson actually enjoys and looks forward to a studio audience, and now with this end, it's a new paradigm for him. The weekly push to complete episodes was what drove him and now, that will no longer be.

agreed

I think that doing the tent was a very expensive proposition - and if I recall it was being done on his property

as much as I like the banter, the travel segments are what makes the show

The tent was expensive and provided some significant production challenges. It's not a soundstage so a lot of segments had to be shot several times due to noise like overflying aircraft, traffic, etc.

The thing I will really miss about the new format will be losing the historical segments. Things like when they told the story of the Ford-Ferrari rivalry at LeMans in the 60's, the career of Jim Clark, the Audi-Lancia battle in rally car racing, the cars of the NASA astronauts, etc.

Yes I especially liked those historical tribute segments.

Uh, I posted the above video two weeks ago. Am I supposed to email you, too?

If you weren't interested enough by the trailer I posted to find out for yourself when it would air, you have nobody to blame but yourself.
