I've read the book a couple of times and watched the movie. Outstanding work that won the Pulitzer Prize. RIP Larry McMurtry 1936-2021.

sigspecopsI read the book about a year before the mini series came out and both were outstanding. One of my favorite things about the story is there are two strong central characters that are both formidable and capable of dealing with the harshness of the old west. The mini series was one of very few films that attempted to portray historicaly accurate clothing and holsters.

bigwagonUntil recently I thought I was the only guy age 50 or above who had not either read the book or seen the miniseries, but I recently rectified both. even read the sequel book. The mini series is great, and is a very faithful representation of the book in a way that very few film adaptations of great books ever achieve. But the book is truly epic, certainly one of the greatest American novels and on a par with anything in world literature in scope and depth. One interesting tidbit about the book is that it was actually adapted from a screenplay McMurtry originally wrote in the early 70s with the intent to have John Wayne as one of the characters. But the screenplay was never sold, so he decided to expand it into a novel.
