If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

From a folk standpoint, I love Michelle Shocked, her Short, Sharp, Shocked album is terrific. From rock, I have to say Stevie Nicks, though I only own one album.

It's difficult to pick one, so: Ann Wilson of Heart - her voice rocks Sarah McLachlin - her voice breaks in a wonderful way to my ears. Lucinda Williams - twangy, emotive voice Annie Haslam - her voice soars Alison Krause - the voice of an angel Shawn Colvin - another angel listen to this Sandy Denny - Brit folk songs sung well Cheri Knight - one album, Northeast Kingdom from the late 1990's. Every song is amazing. She channels Patsy Cline, sings ballads and some really greasy blues. She was a bassist in the Blood Oranges out of Boston but her solo work is what's amazing.
Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

I believe it’s Napolitano, but I agree, and think she’s among the most under-appreciated vocalists (and bass players) of that era.

welp,
+ 2 or 3 for Bjork, yes an acquired taste but still damn good,
and +1 or so for PJ Harvey,
and while I cannot just pic one, the top 2 for me are Alison Goldfrapp and Kate Bush,
Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy. Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries) may she rest in peace.

Fabulous voice, I see a bit of a folksy Joni Mitchell sans the catchy tune of the times.
