I really enjoy songs with John Newman I'd say he qualifies as a Soul Singer. His song with Rudimental (feel the love) is one of my favorite "modern" songs of that genre.

For me, soul music is rooted in gospel, very much vocal driven. The melodies, hooks, emotion all coming from the lead vocals, with of course the background vocals to help it along. Motown is the obvious reference.
