Man on Fire (Netflix series):
I see this was released yesterday. Has anyone seen it, yet? It's got middling reviews on imdb but I have never really thought their review scores were accurate.

Is this a remake of the Denzel Washington film?

It's not a remake of the 2004 Denzel movie, or a sequel.

It's another adaptation of the 1980s book on which that film was also based.

If it does well, they plan to adapt the later books in the Creasy novel series in subsequent seasons.

(And while I haven't seen the new series, the novel and the Denzel film differ in some major ways. For one, the original book is set in Italy and the bad guys are the Italian Mafia. For another, there's no happy ending for the little girl there, and the plot is about revenge rather than rescue. And unlike the film, while Creasy is though to be dead towards the end of Man on Fire, and a funeral is even held, it's revealed at the end that he's actually alive... And he goes on to appears in 4 more novels.)

There are 2 movies based on the book. The first was in 1987 starring Scott Glenn and Joe Pesci. Takes place in Italy. I remember being excited to watch it, and being ultimately disappointed.

Neither movie version had the balls to kill off the girl.

So this is a series and not a movie.

That said I am about four episodes into it, and it is okay and even entertaining.

Does it require the viewer to pay close attention as to not miss details? No.

But the action is good if one is willing to accept comical tactics and events.

If I want real life I will live real life Smile. I want fanciful entertainment in my media. Watching a CAG/DEVGRU/SAS unit infiltrate and grab a target without firing a shot because of intricate planning and coordination is awesome in its real life implications but gets boring in a movie. Give me some ‘splody bullshit in my entertainment with just the right sprinkling of realism. Big Grin

Agree with Mike - it's entertaining if you're in the mood.

It moves along and turns just enough to keep you interested so long as you don't pick it apart.

Cheers~

We’ve watched three episodes, I think the writing is much better than we’ve experienced in several series, some we’ve watched, others abandoned.

to be fair, the Denzel version while dealing with the Columbia Cartel is also about revenge as he believes she is dead. It is only at the very end that he finds out she is, in fact alive.

But yes, the book he even becomes a bit of a celebrity as he wades through the mafia. This is one of the rare cases of I enjoyed the Denzel movie more than the original book. I did enjoy the relationship element and the isolation of the island in the original book.

I do plan to check the series out. I have always felt the Equalizer movies were a 'kind of' sequal to the Man on Fire film.
