The first half of the race was equal parts excellent and shitshow. The early passing is what we want, but not because you just lost half your horsepower on the main straight.
The biggest thing I love as an old race fan is cars are finally breaking again. Even in the "good 'old days," the top teams in the late 80's and early 90's could lap almost the entire field and never need a pit stop, but cars breaking or being too hard to drive were common and would throw a monkey wrench into the entire race that made the 'good 'ol days' that we remember and love.
This year is probably fucked, but the simplest solution is ditch the 50/50 power split for something like 70/30 ICE/Battery. Thankfully, IndyCar, F2, and Aussie Supercars were awesome this week. Colton Herta had a great recovery from the Sprint Race finishing 16th and scoring a 7th in the Feature Race. He's 10th in the standings, but I feel a little better learning that Ritomo Miyata is in his 3rd year of F2.

It seems kinda awkward and artificial. Definitely some kinks to iron out. I think they should begin with the starts, solutions there could carry through the whole product. BTW the sun rises in the east and Ferrari screwed the pooch again with strategy.

Fortunately there's an allowance in the rules to make changes. There is also a likely month long break coming up where the early middle east races are/were that may give some time to implement whatever can be done at this point. The only team that might not like that idea at this point is Mercedes. But once the other Mercedes engine teams work out the most efficient use of power, I see much of their advantage falling away quickly. After the next race in China, we should get a better idea how much difference another track may make, but that could go either way. Whoever came up with this rules concept needs a trip to the woodshed.

What a joke. Well I won’t watch 1 race this year then.
Liberty Media also bought MotoGP. I can only wonder what damage they’ll do to my sport long term. All they care about is money and “growing” the sport. Apparently the billions and hundreds of millions of fans for each sport is not enough. For F1, dude remove the fucking battery bullshit. Run full synthetic fuels and use that marketing to woke/climate change crowd and call it a day. I got news for these dummies. The big ass planes to fly race cars and race bikes all around the world to these different tracks aren’t hybrids. Very fuel dependent and give off plenty of CO2. Just let it be.

Yeah,
Somehow it seems that the hybrid 50/50 BS is the best they could do without driving half of the fans to Formula E.
It worked so well when they tried Formula W. How bad can it be..?
Seems if I want to hear the roar of a V-10 on weekends, I'll have to use my own.

Blame the manufacturers. They're the ones pushing more hybridization and not Liberty Media. As far as the new rules:

I'm another in the don't blame Liberty Media camp. They make their money by having lot's of viewers and if anything, they should be getting a discount from the FIA rights holders or whoever came up with this bad idea.
With Alpine being a MBHPP customer now, I guess that gives him some leverage.

How many teams are you allowed an ownership stake in? Toto owns a good portion of both Mercedes and Williams. Would the FIA let him move up to 3?

I like the critique (iirc) from Verstappen, "why cant we just run gas engines, Electric is what Formula E is for?" or something.
I have to agree with him there.

Not excited by, but not turned off either, from the extra chequered flag podcast with izzy hammond involved.

I enjoyed the crew on the F1TV feed more than old Sky folks, though I admit I missed Bernie Collins a bit.
I've seen mention of being able to "choose" which stream you see. Does that mean if I watch on Apple TV app instead of F1TV app I am back to the Sky folks?
Also, I'll just leave this nugget here:

"I’ve traded my simulator for a Nintendo Switch and I’m playing Mario Kart to prepare for a grand prix," Verstappen quipped during Thursday's press conference ahead of the Chinese GP.

The option for either is on Apple TV. If you scroll to the bottom of the page where you select the icon of the session you want to watch, there are icons for the Sky Sports feeds. I also prefer Bernie Collins over Ruth Buscombe. Also would rather listen to Martin Brundle over JPM.

Thanks! I hadn't even looked at the Apple app after downloading and linking the F1 one.
I do like that there is every season for decades in the F1TV app archive. We need a longer offseason to explore that!

There's always a rotation for drivers on the pit lane for F1TV. This week just happened to be JPM.

On the F1 App, once you start playing the session, use the arrow pad on your remote and look for an icon on the right side of the TV above the progress bar. When you click that button, you have the option of F1TV commentary, Sky Sports commentary, or you can select which driver's roll hoop camera you want to watch.
As far as the race archive, everything before 2000 or so is only 4 or 5 races and maybe season over view. Once you hit the 21st Century is when you get full seasons, but just BBC/ITV commentary.

At least for Quali & the Race. On my Samsung TV, the AppleTV app was locked to F1TV broadcast, couldn't even access the driver feeds. I switched back to my Roku & the F1TV app.

The Apple tv app has separate links to F1TV and Sky Sports.

I can't find a way to access that on the TV. Is that just on ipad?
