bendableWesterns - Why not?
I have a top ten that I consider to be " cowboy / westerns"
In the last two years I've been liking the lite versions
Of the genre.
Like Big Hand for a Little Lady, Maverick, Support your local Sheriff,
Support your local gun Fighter, The Cheyanne Social Club, Rounders.
I dislike civil war movies and Mexican American war movies.

rat2306Good Westerns should also have saloon girls, beans and lots of them by the campfire, slimy scoundrels masquerading as public servants, some rustling and horse thefts, maybe some sodbusters and sheepherders, wagon trains...and panoramic vistas that stir the soul. Movies of the Oregon, Santa Fe, and California trails and legends; Westerns. War movies set before 1865, not so much to me.
Just my thoughts; this thread helped remind me that my SASS membership renewal hadn't made it to me yet by mail. Somehow it went missing months ago.

parabellumThe late Frank Gruber categorized the Western film into seven basic plots:
Union Pacific Story: Focuses on the construction of a railroad, telegraph line, or other modern technology in the frontier.
Revenge Story: Involves a protagonist seeking vengeance for a wrong done to them.
Cavalry and Indian Story: Centers around conflicts between settlers and Native Americans.
Outlaw Story: Features outlaw gangs as central characters.
Marshal Story: Highlights the challenges faced by lawmen in the frontier.
Taming of the West Story: Depicts the process of bringing civilization to the frontier.
Cowboy Story: Focuses on the life and adventures of cowboys in the Old West.

I've had people argue to me that Star Wars isn't sci-fi. People are, in short, sometimes just fucking dumb.
It isn't. There's nothing scientific about it.
What genre is
Star Wars? Simple to determine, just describe it in one sentence. Here goes.
A farm boy learns to use magic from a wizard and teams up with a couple of scoundrels in order to break into a fortress of doom and rescue a princess from a dark lord.
Star Wars is a fairy tale.
