A lot of great covers already listed, quite a number that I like over the originals.
Always like the original, but The Rides' version is a standout...
Johnny Cash's rendition of 'Hurt' has already been mentioned a couple of times and I do like the original Reznor version, but it's the visuals in the Cash video that truly does it for me.
And then there's this performance...
Dad really liked that old TV show.

Oh, since I'm on a non-hard rock kick, here's a couple of more that are worthy of mention (if they haven't already been):
Back in college I listened to a lot of reggae and ska, so artists like Bob Marley, UB40 and The Specials were part of my regular audio diet. It wasn't all punk and metal.

Hendrix' version of All Along the Watchtower is, in fact, the definitive version of the song.
The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Chris Hadfield's Space Oddity
They actually built and launched a space station and then sent Hadfield into space to make the video. You can't beat that.
The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

I like Robert Cray's original version a lot but I like Jo-El Sonnier's better.

Another hard choice - I like Otis's original Dreams to Remember a lot but Delbert's version is my favorite.

Skull Leader
Is this a cover? They do sing the original lyrics, but then add some of their own. I think they do the original justice, but won't call it better.
