The Bear
I did a search, couldn’t find it in the lair. This was an impressive series, however, I see very little comedy. Binged over the last four days and absolutely loved it.

I'm looking for a series right now. Thanks for the recommendation.

We loved it. Have a few friends and family who worked in kitchens, said they couldn't watch it. PTSD triggered with the ticket printers spraying out orders....

It is a very intense show.

One of the best shows of all time, with some outstanding performances.

Very intense.

Context? What is this show? Some info would be helpful here

Nominal premise is of a family-owned Italian beef sandwich restaurant in Chicago.

I'm only through season 1, but there is much more going on than just running a restaurant.

Which drags back in an incredibly talented chef who has been all over the world at places like French Laundry.

Spoiler; he wants to do more than sling beef the rest of his life.

An incredibly dysfunctional family with an inordinate amount of swearing and shouting. Big Grin

We just started the latest season and have mostly enjoyed the show. Some episodes are just awful, though.

Super intense. I have a sib who worked in restaurants that turned me on to this.
Wish I’d been able to pace myself a bit better, but they set up the cliffhangers well, imho.

It is a good show but it is also kind of exhausting. I am also a bit worn out on just how "edgy" the restaurant business is.

I think they do a good job of moderating the intensity, so it doesn't quite get exhausting or overplayed. They walk that line quite well, in my opinion.

It's brutal.

I worked all through high school every day in two local restaurants from prep cook to working the line and really got into it and then went to chef school after the military and still had little idea of what I was getting into.

First job out of chef school was minimum 12 hours a day, often more like 15-16 hour days. 6 days a week. Sundays off. I had ZERO life and was so exhausted by Sunday that I'd sleep half the day away then do it all over again. All for pretty bad pay and NO benefits. Not even a uniform, had to supply my own but they did give me an apron (yay).

After about 8 years of this life I ran away from it and got a real job.

There is a reason why alcoholism, drug use, divorce and suicide is extremely high in the restaurant biz.

Awful like, beating children and puppies awful? Or awful like, cliche and boring? Or, awful like non stop idiotic profanity awful?

Also, what streaming service is this?

Raw, imho. Too close to home. Themes include suicide and alcoholism. Jamie Lee Curtis had me in tears at 1 point. Never thought the gal that showed her tatas in trading places could do that to me. Wink
Hulu streams it.

Yeah, lots of familial dysfunction, mental illness, grief, trauma, frustration, suicide, etc.

But also hilariously funny, happy, endearing, and upbeat at other times.

Watching a bunch of realistically flawed characters try, fail, fall down, get up, grow, fight, help each other, and succeed.

Runs the whole gamut of the human experience, and pulls no punches.

While the term is often overused nowadays to the point of cliche, "raw" is a good way to describe it.

I must be out of touch. I hated this series. I hated the characters. I hated the story. I guess I’m not edgy enough. Everything was unlikeable. I’m glad you guys liked it. The reviews loved it too.

You might try Ted Lasso.

I think it's a very similarly realistic and raw/emotional character-driven "dramedy" in a lot of ways, while being much more upbeat about it as a whole, and also more broadly funny.

Kinda the other side of the coin. Might be more your style.

Agreed. Ted Lasso is a ray of sunshine.

I liked Ted Lasso. I got a completely different dysfunctional I want to kill myself vibe from The Bear.

So its basically Lip from Shameless grows up and becomes a cook/chef.
