There are certain artists that I return to again and again, because something about them connects. Dolores O’Riordan is one. “Zombie” is probably her most well known song.
I honestly never knew the back story of the song. I thought it was simply a pro-Republic, anti-Brit lament. It’s not. It’s a humanistic, anti-terrorism song that doesn’t take sides.
March 20, 1993, the IRA planted two bombs in Warrington, in northern England. The second bomb was particularly horrific, injuring dozens of people, but most cruelly claiming the lives of three-year-old Jonathan Ball and 12-year-old Tim Parry: a twin tragedy that shocked and appalled both the UK and Irish public.
The official video contains footage shot in Belfast during The Troubles, and the now famous scenes of Dolores in gold body paint and drape in front of a cross with young angels in silver paint. I understand that scene was intended to bring to mind Michelangelo’s, La Pieta.
“I don’t care whether it’s Protestant or Catholic, I care about the fact that innocent people are being harmed,” she said. “That’s what provoked me to write the song… It doesn’t name terrorist groups or organizations. It doesn’t take sides. It’s a very human song,” says O’Riordan.
12 year old Tim Parry. He lingered for 5 days in the hospital before doctors encouraged his parents to disconnect life support.
3 year old Jonathan Ball, killed instantly in the bomb blast.
