As the article says, never achieved the big breakthrough as an artist, but he certainly produced great music throughout his career. I’ve listened to him thes past 40+ years.

Saw Ely twice in the 80s, one of times Joe Strummer from The Clash played in his band. Great performer, he was certainly underrated in his time.
