He was 88. He wrote some great songs, although I wouldn’t say I was a huge fan of him on stage. He was a big part of the important Outlaw movement in Country Music along with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and others. Of course Kristofferson and those three resurrected their careers with the formation of The Highwaymen.
Among his songwriting credits are "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which were hits for other artists. [Wiki]
He was a U.S. Army captain who flew helos and also earned a Ranger tab.
Dang that's too bad...but expected I suppose. He was one of my favorites. I regret that I didn't get a chance to see him live.

Just saw this as well. Great singer, songwriter and pretty decent actor.
Lived a long, full, and amazing life.

He grew up in my hometown San Mateo (although born in Texas) and attended the same grammar school- St. Matthews, albeit a few years before me. The older nuns would mention him sometimes.
I was a sailor I was born upon the tide And with the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner around the Horn to Mexico I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed But I am living still

I enjoyed him in several movies he was in - the “Blade” movies come to mind. He was also a proud veteran who served our country as an Army helicopter pilot in the early 60’s. He had a good, long run.

He was in the 1987 miniseries Amerika as well.
Set in 1997, 10 years after the Soviet Union defeated and occupied the USA.
Little did we know that they would only last another 4 years

Blade was my favorite role of his. Probably “Convoy” to Blade was my window. I really enjoyed his work. RIP.

I saw him in the twilight of his career. His daughter was on stage with him and helping him remember the words. I thought he had dementia, turns out he had Lyme disease and made a good comeback. He talked as much as he played. I am glad that I saw him.
