If Mr. Douglas lived in Manhattan...
...he was obviously well off.

So why did he buy such a shitty, run-down farm?

Why not buy something a bit easier to run and fulfill his farming dream?

Discuss...

I think Mr. Douglas bought the Haney Place because he did not know any better, he was a wannabe farmer from NYC, with zero experience in farming. His romantic and patriotic (cue up Yankee Doodle Dandy) feelings regarding farming clouded any realistic decisions. And Mr. Haney was the con man of Hooterville, often duping a more naive Mr. Douglas.

I loved Green Acres. It was as absurd of a sitcom as one can get, the word "dada" comes to mind. I thought it was extremely funny.

He knew he was going to need a lot of quick cash to support his new expensive trophy wife.
