Movie: “Song Sung Blue”
Apologies if it’s been discussed- I didn’t find it in search. It’s not a Neil Diamond bio- it’s a true story about a Neil Diamond tribute band that was popular in Milwaukee.

Features Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, who was Oscar nominated for her role. Personally I think she just had better PR. Not that she didn’t deserve it, but I think Jackman was actually better and deserved a nomination as well.

Both are actually singing, and there is plenty of Neil Diamond music, but the movie is about their relationship. I thought it was excellent, as did the majority of people reviewing it.

Now streaming on AppleTV and Peacock for free, and available on Amazon for a nominal fee.

Thanks for the reminder. I wanted to see it and maybe I'll check it out via Prime.

Surprisingly good.

Great performances all around and a pretty good story. The love story at the center, while a bit cliched is what we all aspire to.

Wow what a blast from the past. It was 1976, I graduated from high school and moved to "The City" for College.
College was fun, the young ladies were amazing, I became president of my Fraternity. The era of Classic Rock was huge (so was Disco but nowadays we never mention that along with Leisure Suits that many wore from that era.)

If you are of that era you might remember a tv show "Happy Days" featuring "The Fonz" (Henry Winkler), Helen Reddy had a lot of hits and her own TV Show, Neil Diamond was huge back in those days.

Those days now seem like a pleasant dream, people were kinder, unlike todays hate and discontent.

I enjoyed it, would recommend.

Here's video of the actual couple singing Forever in Blue Jeans with Eddie Vedder (this scene was portrayed in the movie)

I do not like most bio pics in general, especially films about people who are major media figures, and still alive- movies like the ones about Elvis, Queen, Elton John, Dylan, Johnny Cash, etc. There is so much film/video, audio, media content on these type of figures, to my eyes and ears, it would be hard to believe the content on screen.

But Song Sung Blue takes a different approach which sounds interesting. Quentin Tarrantino, who hates the bio-pic genre, brought up that he would not be interested in a film about Elvis's life story, but a day at Sun Studios when he was discovered- that would be interesting to him. I recently was at my nieces house and she insisted we stay up late after dinner to watch a movie called Air, centered around Michael Jordan and his signing with the Nike shoe company. It wasn't a bio-pic about Jordan, in fact the actor's face and voice were never seen and heard. IMO, it was a very good film, we enjoyed it, and all it did was take one little (but consequential) event from his life and created an engaging two hour movie.

I will look for Song Sung Blue, never knew about it, thanks for posting.

There is a 2008 documentary by the same name, “Song Sung Blue”. I haven’t watched it, but it could be interesting.

I’m recommending the 2025 film “Song Sung Blue” starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, which is based on that true story, but is not a documentary. I’d recommend watching the film first, as I’m sure it will be more enjoyable before you know the full true story.

That was fun, thank you for posting it. I miss Summerfest a lot. The room the guy was being interviewed in reminds me of rooms in a half dozen friends' houses we used to play Sheepshead in back in the day.

My wife was born and raised in Milwaukee, so we watched it. Very enjoyable movie. Hugh Jackman is great. Kate Hudson is also great...and she nailed the eastern Wisconsin/Milwaukee accent and voice inflections.

(BTW, Micheal Imperioli is in the film, too!)
