Jackie was one of the all-time greats who tragically had her career cut short by multiple sclerosis. MS forced her to retire at age 28, and she died at age 42.

One of the two Stradivarius cellos she played is currently in use by Yo-Yo Ma.

The first time I remember hearing Elgars Concerto was during the movie "Lorenzos Oil" That was my first introduction to Yo Yo Ma, and I still love his music to this day. I get hung up on some things, and a few pieces I will research to find the best performance, etc.

That led me to Jacqueline Du Pre and her tragic story. I love that her teacher removed the piece from his repertoire because she had taken possession of it.

Oddly, this piece (and not just the first movement) also fits with my studies of WWI and the aftermath. the rebuilding if you will. While one of Elgars last pieces I do believe to be one of his best.
